学校が先

ひとつだけハッキリわかったのは、最初に学校を決めて、それからその学校の通学区の中で家を探すということ。学校の回りの住宅の手入れが悪ければやめればいいい。校庭は広いほうがいい。校庭は水はけが良いほうがいい。これを基準に雨上がりの１日を学校めぐりで費やす。写真も取る。これで万全だ。出張が終わって日本に帰ってからゆっくり学校を決めればいい。

だがしかし、日本に帰っても、学校の件は最後まで決まらなかった。ESLが充実してた方がいいのか、治安を優先するのか、であった。ダウンタウンはESLが充実してるが、ひとつ通りを越えると貧しい区域というのが難点だった。「より安全な地区がいい」というもっともなアドバイスにしたがってESLの重みを減らしていった。

会社の近くというのもいい考えである。いざというときに近くにいることは何かと便利なのに違いない。朝晩、送り迎えを頼めば車が１台でいい。通勤も１０分以内だ。昼飯を食べに家に帰れる。

すでに、小学校がどこに有るかは熟知している。学校区の評判もわかっている。学校区を決め、小学校を二つに絞った。そしてたまたま、名刺をもらっていたSchool District OfficeにEmailを出した。返事はすぐに来た。

Elementary School and XYZ Elementary Schools are very good 
schools and have the same services(e.g. computer technology, automated 
library, etc.) that you witnessed at MMM Elementary School.  The 
achievement in these schools is very good, and the teachers are committed to 
a quality education for all the students.  I believe your family will be 
very happy in either of these two schools.

I will send a copy of your memo and my response to the principals of these 
two schools.  Mr. WWW is Principal of ABC Elementary School 
and Dr. DDD is Principal of XYZ Elementary School.

それだけではない。片方の校長からも早速Email が来た。

大変なことになってきた。いよいよ小学校を決めるのか。それもEmailを何事もないように使って。それに校長もドクターだ。やはり、全く新しい世界がアメリカにはあるようだ。
