Mountainous district of Shirakami is one of the stage of "The Princess Mononoke".
There has a beechen primeval woods. In 1993, Shirakami's a beechen primeval woods was registered in the world inheritance agreement of UNESCO.

It is said that a beechen forest was born about 8000 years ago. A valuable alpine plant, the wild bird, and insects are rich there. Especially, 2000 kinds or more are confirmed as for insects. 500 kinds or more are confirmed as for the plant. Still more, it is said that there are a lot of unknown seeds there. Therefore, this region is called a pool of the gene.
