The original picture exhibition of Studio Ghibli's animation work was held in the Mitsukoshi Museum in Shinjuku, Japan from August 31 to September 16, 1996.This is the first eshibition to collect original pictures in one place; from Nausicaa to Mononoke Hime.

In Japan, animated cartoons are valued more than their backgrounds. So far, there are not necessarily a lot of persons who value the background. The reason is that the background is only a supporting player in the animation work. However, Ghibli's background picture are so beautiful that it can be endured enough to appreciate. Then, this exhibition was planned to appreciate the background picture, the original picture and the image board which became the material of the background picture.

This exhibition attracted further attention by the sale of commemorative metro cards. Moreover, they were all sold on the first day. The first day, an entrance limitation was imposed because it was so crowded. The congestion continued until the final day of the exhibit.
