Sunflower (1969) |
This is a fine work performed by Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. I felt they were a little bit older for roles of newly married couple. On the next Morning of their marriage, Mastroianni made huge omelets. On that day, he went to the war. And he was missing. Sophia Loren went to Russia searching for him. The scene that she walked through Sunflower fields where sunflowers was as tall as her should be remembered in the history of the movie. It is a story of absurdity. And "The theme of Sunflower" reflects a mood of the movie and it is also a fine tune. |

Citizen Kane (1941) |
This movie is said to be a masterpiece that Orson Welles directed and he was a main character. Then he was 26 years old. I read that a lot of innovative filming technique were used. The story is that a private detective was figuring out the meaning of "Rosebud". Welles described a life of a real person who were searching for authority and money. And the family of a real person got angry. I heard that the movie lost an Academy Awards and did not success in business performance probably due to their plots. (It is a story of the founder of the family like this.) |
113 |
Taxi Driver (1976) | Robert DeNiro was a main character and Jodie Foster who were 14 years old then played a role of a prostitute. His performance is quite powerful with a almost insane role. |

Gone with the Wind (1939) |
A great work of nearly four hours. The story is in the era of The Civil War. It seems that a main character, Scarlett, still has fans now. She has especially female fans. My wife says that her way of freely living with her own opinions is attractive. But an American friend of mine said just a word, "spoiled". Vivien Leigh as a role of Scarlett is quite brightly beautiful. We should watch the movie at least once. |

Chungking Express (1994) |
This movie consists of two stories. But I did not notice it when I watched this movie till I looked at credits at the ending. I believed that a woman with blonde hair who dealt drugs run away from her organization throwing her wig and worked at local restaurant listening to "California Dreamin'", and finally she could perfectly disappear from her organization becoming a flight attendant. It is a vivid and tasteful movie. Japanese title is quite a jargon, "a loving planet" or "a planet which loves". There is a site which presents scenes of this movie, its pages are only in Japanese though. |

Plenty (1985) | A main character of this movie is more independent than Scarlett and she is almost insane. She worked for resistance activities during World War II. Caught by incidents or herself then, she desperately spent her life after the war. Meryl Streep intensively plays her role. Sting plays here a little bit. |

Nine 1/2 weeks (1986) |
A tasteful love story in New York by Mickey Rourke who works at a security firm or a firm like that and Kim Basinger who works at an art gallery. The story is their love affair for nine and a half weeks. In another point of view, it could be an erotic story. A scene of rubbing with ice is famous. At the beginning, Brian Ferry's song, probably "Slave to love"(?), is played and Ron Wood and Tina Turner appear a little bit in a scene of party. |
118 |
Alien (1979) |
First of all. Ripley played by Sigourney Weaver is quite cool. She never gives up fighting the alien attacking again and again. I feel her enemy is a sexual metaphor. Ridley Scott directed and described a strange future world. The spaceship is ragged and water is leaking. The screen is dark and he created an original world. Three series followed. Each would not better than this but they are also nice movies. |

The Exorcist (1973) |
I like the original novel and I read it several times. A girl starts to act strange behavior and receives medical treatment. But they can not find the cause and try to have exorcism. A priest who majored in the medical science is called. His opinion is that exorcism has not been done since the psychiatry was developed in 16th century and psychiatrist should treat her. He tries to analyze medically her behavior. He sometimes finds things beyond science. He struggles between supernatural phenomenon and science. (looks like Scully and Mulder.) The novel contains lots of medical terms and lots of grotesque description. But it is a great and fine work. In the movie, "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield is used. |
120 |
The Elephant Man (1980) |
An impressive work. I still remember a cry, "I'm a human being." Anthony Hopkins and William Hurt play here. (We can not recognize William's face.) This is my first David Lynch's movie. I thought he prefers a human drama. But considering his works after this, I believe he just likes occultism in this story. (I like only one work that he directed, "Twin Peaks". It could be a great movie if the long TV version is edited for around four hours.) |

City Lights (1931) |
A silent movie of Chaplin. He himself composed background music. If "The Great Dictator" is a masterpiece in terms of ideology, then this is a masterpiece in terms of "laughter and tears" that are his another theme. A homeless performed by Chaplin made effort to prepare a cost of an operation for a blind girl who was selling flowers. Her blindness was cured. They met again in the last. When the girl touched Chaplin, a black screen came out with a word, "YOU". How can I say about this outstanding ending? |
122 |
Cleopatra (1963) | Elizabeth Taylor is a main character. She was dazzlingly beautiful. The movie is a fine work. We should watch it at least once. |
123 |
Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1987) | Original novel is written by Gabriel Garcia Marques. He is one of my favorite writers but I have not read it. ("100 Years of Solitude" is the best of his works.) An actress whom I was a fan of in my high school days played a role of a maiden in the movie. And a main actor is called as "Alain Delon in South America", probably. The story goes on in a gloomy mood but I feel relieved at the scene of letters at the last. |
124 |
Out of Rosenheim (Baghdad Cafe) (1988) |
An old german couple quarrelled in the desert, a husband was gone and a wife stayed in Baghdad Cafe in the desert. Main characters are her and a landlady. "Cafe" looks like small hotel with restaurant at the first floor. The wife is good at magic and sometimes plays it at the restaurant, A scene of a sign of Baghdad Cafe in the very blue sky is impressive. Music is good. A heartwarming movie. |

Shakespeare in Love (1998) |
Actually I watched this yesterday. I have not read Shakespeare much but I believe conversations of the movie is full of Shakespeare's phrases. Movies based on Shakespeare are also not my type and I almost always fall asleep in the middle of the movie. But this movie is quite moving. "Romeo and Juliet" is played in the movie. I learned for the first time that stages in Shakespeare's era is like a sumo (Japanese style wrestling) ring. A main actress resembles Emma Thompson who is my type. A main actor, Shakespeare, looks like Prince (a rock musician). I can not feel him as Shakespeare. |
126 |
Enter the Dragon (1973) |
This movie made me a fan of Bruce Lee. Then I started to take lessons of Shorinji Kempo, kind of kung fu. Warming-up exercise was quite harder than training of kicks or punches. I run on the road around gymnasium, (unfortunately sometimes pieces of glass stuck on my back of feet,) did a push-up or other exercises for more than one hour. The hardest one was Usagi-aruki, rabbit walk. I walked in a squatting position holding ankles by hands along Dojo. Soon my legs were cramped and I could not move my legs any more. Next day all of my body had pain. I had to make tremendous efforts to work in the office. It was just after I joined a company after graduation. Soon I became very busy and quit to take lessons. |
127 |
Godfather (1972) | A famous work. Usually this movie wins a top when voting is made in US. It is said that this is a movie of "love for family". I feel it is a profound work. |
128 |
Imagine : John Lennon (1988) | Documentary film of John Lennon. I am impressed on a scene that Lennon is playing piano in a big room and Yoko opens curtains one by one. Sean, a child of them, is also in this movie. We realize Lennon takes care of and loves him. |
129 |
Primal fear (1996) | This is a movie of a trial performed by Richard Gere. He plays a role of the lawyer for a defendant. Laura Linney is the prosecutor's side. After the thrilling trial session, I was quite surprised at an incredible twist. |
130 |
The Great Dictator (1940) |
Speech at the last is famous. It is touching. But most impressive is a scene of a balloon. Chaplin reminds us of "a comedy" firstly. But he made lots of ideological works. I was surprised to hear that he suffered from red purge in his last half of life. Movies were not art in US then, were they? |
131 |
Johnny got his gun (1971) | The story is that Johnny got his gun at the war and got back. It is an anti-war movie and a little bit dismal. I was shocked at this movie when I went to watch it in my high school days. |
132 |
Private Benjamin (1980) |
Benjamin played by Goldie Hawn joined an army when her husband died just after their wedding. Basically this is a comedy. Finally she became independent woman. It is a fine work. My wife had longed for electric toothbrush since she watched this movie. When she got it, she was so happy that she brushed quite long time and her gums bled. |
133 |
Rosemary's baby (1968) | Directed by Polanski. A main character is Mia Farrow. It was filmed at Dakota House in New York. It is a story of some family, a down-and-out actor and his wife. This is high tensed and thrilling horror movie. The last sub title is unnecessary. |
134 |
The Fisher King (1991) | Robin Williams is fighting fit here. This is tasteful movie but too many stuff might be filled in this movie. This might not famous as Robin Williams' movie, but it is nice. |
135 |
Paris, Texas (1984) | This is a road movie of story searching for a wife left home. Music is by Ry Cooder. This is an ordinary road movie. Nastassja Kinski plays as a wife. Finally a husband finds his wife and talks with her through mirror and glass. (He can see her but she can't see him.) I felt this scene was unnatural. (I found a comment of this movie on Internet by chance. It said, "This movie describes people who have a problem for face-to-face communication. Uhm, it's meaningful!) |
136 |
The Mission (1986) | The story goes on around grand waterfall in South America. Robert DeNiro is a main character. The waterfall full of screen is very powerful. |
137 |
The Great Race (1965) | I did not remember the detail but I enjoyed the movie very much when I watched it in my younger days. It is a movie of the classic car race performed by stars in Hollywood. Very young Peter Folk also played here. |
138 |
Edwards Scissorhands (1990) | A story of a boy whose hands are scissors. The director of this movie directed "Batman". Main character (a boy) is Johnny Depp. This is a mysterious and tasteful movie. |
139 |
Se7en (1995) |
Bizarre murders happened and a word of Seven Deadly Sins were left at the scenes. When five persons were killed, the killer surrendered himself. Who are two who would be dead? Characters are two detectives and a wife of one of them, and the killer. Story went on thrillingly. The killer is played by Kevin Spacey, two detectives are Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. His wife is played by his real wife. Scenes at murders are gorier than "Angel Heart". |

Major League (1989) | It is an ordinary comedy of a baseball team in the Major League. The last scene reminds me the winning of championship of Hanshin Tigers, the Japanese professional baseball team in 1985. I am about to be moved to tears. |
