61 Unforgiven
(1992)
Clint Eastwood's western movie. I believe that he made his debut on the western movie of poetic justice. Here, he shows an antithesis of justice describing an old pothunter, a sheriff who wants to keep the town peace and prostitutes.
62 New York, New York
(1977)
I am a fan of Liza Minnelli. I became her fan watching "Come Saturday Morning" in my junior high school days. (It could be a title of theme song and the title of the movie might be different one.) She is originally a singer, so movies of music like "New York, New York" or "Cabaret" are good.
In the victory party of World War II, Francine played by Liza Minnelli and Jimmy played by Robert DeNiro happen to meet. Francine is a singer and Jimmy is a saxophone player. Robert DeNiro plays his role well as going-his-way, short tempered and rich talented jazz musician. Two join some big band and go to a concert tour. Then they fall in love, get married and are having a baby. But many things happen and they are apart. (I feel that Jimmy leaves.)
Francine sings, "Sometimes you're happy, sometimes you're sad, but the world goes around..." accompanied by a piano, coming back after having a baby. It is great singing! They start their own new lives and they play "New York, New York" in different ways. At the last, Jimmy comes to Francine's concert and drops by her dressing room. He asks her to have Chinese food and she says yes. But she goes back from the back door. And Jimmy, waiting at the front door, walks away.
63 Fitzcarraldo
(1981)
There is a man in a jungle of the South America, who loves opera. He has a dream to build an opera house there. He needs to succeed in gum business. He makes short cut dragging a cargo boat over the mountain with help of local Indians. It is very exciting that many people are dragging a real boat over the mountain. The boat is damaged. I am moved to see the boat is leaning when it comes into the harbor.
Directed by Werner Herzog in Germany. Main role is played by Claus Kinski. He has wild face. Nastasha Kinski is his daughter.
64 Julia
(1977)
Lillian and Julia knew each other since they were children. Julia was kindhearted and had leadership. Growing up, Lillian became playwright and Julia started anti-Nazism activities attending Vienna University. When Lillian left US to a writers conference in Russia, a guy who named himself as an acquaintance of Julia appeared and asked Lillian to bring fund to Berlin for anti-Nazism activity. It was very dangerous for her who was a Jewish. But she made up her mind to do it. Lilian met Julia in Berlin for a while. Julia told her that she had a baby. Lilian's expression when she heard that a baby's name was "Lillian" is Jane Fonda's one of the best performance.
Later Lillian got to know that Julia was murdered. As Julia told her, "If some trouble happen to me, please take care of my baby", she tried to find her baby. But she could not find her...
This is very good movie. Lillian was played by Jane Fonda and Julia by Vanessa Redgrave. I heard that Meryl Streep made her debut here.
65 In the name of the father
(1993)
The main role is played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Basically, many of his movies are fine. This is based on true story. The main character was arrested for a bombing of a pub in London. He was actually innocent but they also arrested his father to make him confess. After all he was in a jail for fourteen years. His father was dead in a jail. It is very serious, as this is true story.
Emma Thompson played a role of his attorney.
66 Baby Boom
(1987)
A main role is played by Diane Keaton, whom I am a fan of. This is a story of a super-yuppie in bubble economy. A hard working business woman, Diane Keaton, received a call that she would inherit from a distant relative. She went to JFK looking forward the inheritance, but it was a baby. This is a heartwarming movie. Sam Shepherd played an assisting role. I felt that yuppies' "wording" was interesting.
67 Modern Times
(1936)
Directed by Charlie Chaplin. This movie is a serious criticism to the industrial society. Charlie, who is working in a factory, is tightening bolts everyday and its action never stops even in his home. And he is sent to mental hospital. As a matter of fact, sometimes I continue to work still at my home. I should be careful.
68 Manhattan
(1979)
In Woody Allen's movies, I like this most as well as "Interia". The story is his style like that his divorced wife got to be a lesbian (the wife is played by Meryl Streep.), he dates with the wife of his friend, he has an affair with seventeen years old girl friend, etc. The movie is monochrome. The scene is famous that they are sitting on a bench by the river. It is a great scenery. I like scenes that he walks along with Diane Keaton around the Metropolitan Museum. (It might be different place, though...)
69 La Paloma
(1974)
In a high class cabaret, a young noble falls in love with a singer there. (She is a little bit old.) He is told that he would be unhappy if he get married with her, but marries her. One day she falls in love with his friend. She requests him that he agrees her to have relation with his friend. But he refuses it. Soon she dies of a disease. Then her cruel revenge starts.
It is quite impressive that they sing an aria together at their wedding or at a honeymoon. This is very nice and mysterious movie.
70 Eyes wide shut
(1999)
Kubrick is one of my most favorite directors. I heard that he wanted to make this movie when he completed "A 2001 space odyssey". He is dead after he made this film, this is his posthumous work. Usually I watch movies of rental video, but I went to a theater to watch this.
In Kubrick's movies, the music is impressive. In a ritual at a secret house, profound and strange music is played. When naked Nicole Kidman moves her hips a little bit in front of a mirror with a song "Shake your hips". It is erotic. (I thought the music was "Shake your hips", but it was similar but different one when I watched a preview film.)
I heard that Kubrick himself called this movie as the best. The last word in the movie of a great film master is a four-letter-word. Nicole Kidman says it. How can I say, I was surprised, or laughed, or was disappointed, or...? Anyway it is the quite unspeakable last scene.

71 Jurassic Park
(1993)
What is the greatest point of this movie is to make people feel that dinosaurs are very real, and they have never seen dinosaurs. When a dinosaur looks through the glass of a window, the glass gets misted with dinosaur's breath. Spielberg must agree with the warm-blooded dinosaur theory. ( By the way, birds are thought to be descendants of dinosaurs. Dinosaurs with feathers were found. (in fossils) I heard that recently the boundary of birds and dinosaurs has become indistinct. )
72 Fu rong zhen (Hibiscus Town)
(1984)
A Chinese movie. I hardly remember this movie, as I watched this long time ago. Probably it described people's life during the great cultural revolution. The main character was a female, I guess. And I feel this movie was very good.
73 Enemy Mine
(1985)
When an earthman (Dennis Quaid) fought aliens, he forcedly landed on some planet. Then he started to live with an alien (Louise Gossette Jr.) who also landed there and survived. Fortunately the alien was more intelligent and he mastered English. They started to communicate. This movie looks like a space movie with SFX, but it is a human drama.
74 Full Metal Jacket
(1987)
This is a Kubrick's war movie. This consists of two parts. In former part, the story is in the US Marine training school. A dull recruit is changing to different personality. Like Jack Nicholson in "Shining". In second part, the story is in Vietnam. Team members are shot by a sniper. A sniper is a young female. They shoot her and walk down exultantly singing Mickey Mouse.
In the category of war movie, there are "Green beret" formally and "Platoon", "Apocalypse Now", "Born in July 4th", and so on. It seems that every kind of theme has been described. And then Kubrick. I expected much. This movie is as I expected like his other movies that are difficult to explain easily.
75 Footloose
(1984)
When I lived in a local city, I went to Tokyo. Then "Footloose" was on the run and I was surprised that people were making line over 100m. Three months later, I went to watch it when it was on the screen in the local city. But I was also surprised that audience were five to six and many mosquitos were flying there.
This is bracing adolescence movie. Kevin Bacon performs as a high school student. And music is good. Many hit tunes at that moment are played. Bonnie Tyler is good. "Almost Paradise" is a ballad and I have hoped to sing this in Karaoke...
76 Space Camp
(1986)
In summer holidays, high school students are attending a training course for space shuttle in NASA. But some mistakes happen, and they are launched to the space. I am a fan of Lea Thompson, who plays a role of a member of high school student trainees.
77 The Day After
(1983)
This is originally a TV movie. When I lived a local city, I went to watch this at citizen hall. A nuclear bomb explodes on some US city and the days after the explosion are described. I feel that the movie is quite real like residents are losing hair, or bleeding would not stop, etc.
I believe this is minor movie but I found this in a rental corner of Sumiya.
78 Zigeunerweisen
(1980)
Directed by Seijun Suzuki. This is very mysterious movie. When they listen to Zigeunerweisen of the old record, they hear strange low voice. Two women who are quite resemble each other make us confused who is who. The scene is impressive that Naoko Otani tears konjak.
79 Howard's End
(1992)
Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins play main roles. This is a very fine work. Emma won Academy Award by this role. This is a story of "house" in England.
80 The Firm
(1993)
Tom Cruise is a favorite especially with females but he has not been my favorite due to his smiling face like sneering. In "Rain Man" his mood was effective. In "The Firm", I realized he is something as an actor. When he goes back home very late, he delivers a rose to his wife. Jeanne Triplehorn plays his wife's role. I watched her in "Sliding Door" recently, but I was surprised that her mood was quite different.

81 Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb
(1964)
A masterpiece of Kubrick. Peter Sellers and George C. Scott perform here. This movie is comical and cynical. We can call this a war movie or political movie. At the end of movie hydrogen bombs explode all over the world.
82 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
(1983)
This is the third one of Star Wars trilogy. I like this best. Princess Carrie Fisher is very good. Is an image of "Princess" of Americans like this ? I rather like this kind of princess too. I watched this movie in the theater and I felt giddy at the scene of air bikes. And it is quite impressive on the scene that Ewoks fight against giant machines and robots.
83 Rumble Fish
(1983)
Directed by Coppola. It was a monochrome movie but only rumble fish swimming in a pot was colored. Mickey Rourke, Matt Dillon, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Nicolas Cage and Tom Waits performed here. A nice movie.
84 The Deer Hunter
(1978)
A great movie. Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep performed. It is a story of insane. The theme music is tasteful. This is a very nice movie but I feel blue after watching it.
85 The Poseidon Adventure
(1972)
In the storm, a big ship went upside down and a group struggled to survive. I was shocked that a preacher, the leader of the group, finally killed himself to jump into fire. But I still don't understand why. The preacher was performed by Gene Hackman.
86 Roman Holiday
(1953)
A movie by cute Audrey Hepburn. In Star Wars, it is also my opinion, but I like this kind of princess too. The scene that putting hand into a mouth of statue is famous. I want to do it like that... (But I have not been in Italy and have no plan though.)
87 Siesta
(1987)
Mysterious movie. And Ellen Barkin, a main character is mysteriously beautiful. I think Siesta means a nap. I feel like dreaming in this movie.
88 Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(1969)
A fine work by Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Katharine Ross. The scene that they play on the bicycle is impressive. "Raindrops keep falling on my head" on the background is also very good song.
89 The Remains of the Day
(1993)
A fine work by Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. Original novel is written by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is a love story of a square butler and a refined chief maid. After all they could not say their feelings and the chief maid got married with other guy. At the end, they met at a cafe and talked awkwardly. This is a truly fine work.
90 The world according to Garp
(1982)
A main character is Robin Williams. Glenn Close and John Lithgow also play here. A story of a love child, Garp and his mother. Thoughts and behavior of young generation in US in 60's are described. I heard that every one cut is one and half or two minutes.
91 Annie Hall
(1977)
I am a fan of Diane Keaton. I wondered why Diane Keaton had good feeling with Woody Allen when they met for the first time in the movie. (They were lovers in real life then.) It is interesting that there are sub titles of their inmost hearts on their conversations. This is a good movie.
On the last, they happened to meet and talked a little bit at the cafe in New York. Then they said "bye", or so. It is cool ending.
92 Polpioli Diament
(1957)
I watched this movie on the TV program, "The Sunday Movie Theater" when I was a high school student. It is Polish movie and directed by Andrzej Wajda. It describes a daily life and a life as a terrorist of a young man. I thought "death" is some kind of symbol and momentary. But in this movie a main character kept suffering in a garbage dump. I felt it would be a real situation.
93 Angel Heart
(1987)
A movie performed by Robert DeNiro and Mickey Rourke. A private detector played by Rourke was requested to find a singer named Johnny. Rourke started to investigate, but relevant persons would be killed in brutal ways. Who killed them?, who was Johnny?; that is a story. This movie contains quite aesthetic scenes and very creepy scenes. A director is Alan Parker.
94 Sophie's Choice
(1982)
Fine performance of Meryl Streep. A story of a tough ("tough" is too simple for this though.) "Choice" of Sophie played by Meryl Streep in a camp for Jews. I like this Streep's work best along with "Out of Africa".
95 Zainichi
(1997)
A long movie over 4 hours. In the first half news regarding Zainichi from Japan's lost in war until today continues. ("Zainichi" are Koreans who live in Japan especially who were brought to Japan by Japanese before 1945 while Japan invaded Korea.) In the latter half stories of six Zainichi who are from first, second and third generation are described.
Cheong Byoung Chung had raised her children working hard in Shinjuku since the post war confusion. She is very powerful.
Eiichi Arai is a blues singer. We can say it is Korean blues. "Chong Ha Road" is a famous song in Japan. He sings very powerfully. He played live at the garden of a temple.
Hyeon Chang Il is a camera man in TV firm. He is in the third generation. He looks like totally Japanese young man. His dream is to produce a documentary film that our ancestors' journey to Japan island via Korean Peninsula.
Lee Ryeong Ja is a daughter of Sueko Yasumoto who wrote "Nian-chan". I did not know "Nian-chan" but it was written in 1958 and described a diary of young brothers who lost their parents and lived in a coal-mining town. Lee Ryeong Ja visits the town where her mother lived. This movie has heavy theme but when I watch her smile, I feel I am relieved or I could see the light of hope. The last scene is that she walking up a hill with "Chong Ha Road".
We watched this at Kawasaki International Theater. It was closing. This movie was the last run. This is a pamphlet then.
96 The Terminator
(1984)
In a future, when robots are conquering the world, a leader of the human disturbs their plots. Then robots plan to kill his mother before she bears the leader in the past, sending mechanic killer to her times. It is quite scared that at the ending, the killer attacks again and again even if his parts are destroyed. There is a sequel and all the computer chip is destroyed to produce the robots when the leader is a kid. So ... ?
97 Forrest Gump
(1994)
A tasteful work. This movie was a big hit also in US. Probably are there very few honest and straight guys like him there ?
98 Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Doom
(1984)
There are three Indiana Jones series. I like this best. This kind of movies suit Harrison Ford. This movie goes like a roller coaster. By the way, main character is "Indiana", but in Japan his name is thoroughly "Indy" in sub titles, pamphlets, AD's, etc.
99 Radio Show
(1997)
A Japanese slapstick comedy. On the live radio drama, a fuss begins as a main actress changes her name to Mary Jane from Japanese traditional name and it is her lover's wife's name. Many famous actors and actresses play. It is great that Kaori Momoi shows only her back and voice, and Nobuko Miyamoto cleans and knocks down trash cans. I watch Kyoka Suzuki for the first time. She has natural mood of housewife and I guess she is a nice actress. I heard that she plays a main role in a movie called "Kafka". I will watch it.
100 Dog Day Afternoon
(1975)
Al Pacino's comedy. He makes us laugh, playing seriously. He is a great actor.
