Tetsuji Katsuta is a software and hardware
engineer living in Kyoto Pref., Japan.
While developing music-related software as his
job, he also participates in art production
projects with renowned contemporary artists, and
creates many of his own works.
Many of his works are music-themed, including
media art pieces centered around music and its
structure, robots that play instruments, and
original musical instruments.
He is a guitar and piano player and has a broad
knowledge of music theory.
He is particularly interested in visualizing
musical structures and the role that scales and
chord intervals play in music, and these
interests are strongly reflected in his media
art works.
For example, one piece he creates is called
"Music Derby," which uses robots or model trains
to show the frequency of notes in a particular
song. In this piece, any song is played on an
electronic instrument, and the robots and models
compete based on the frequency of the notes
"Do-Re-Mi...(A,B,C...)."
In his another work "Music Plant," he
demonstrates that by using mathematical
processing to rearrange the pitch of any song
and playing it, a new song can be generated, and
that certain characteristics of the original
song can be inherited.
In creating original instruments, he devised a
circular acoustic instrument that can be easily
transposed, demonstrating the potential of
treating music mathematically.
He also has a strong interest in robotics, and
has created humanoid robots that can
automatically play musical bells and electronic
drums, and sing using voice synthesis. These
robots are used in recreational settings such as
kindergartens and elderly care facilities.
In terms of hardware production, he owns laser
cutters, CNC machines, and 3D printers, and also
outsources the production of printed circuit
boards.
In terms of software development, he primarily
uses the C++ programming language.
He holds a Master's degree in Computer Science
from the American University (Washington D.C.)
in the United States and a Master's degree in
Social Sciences from Waseda University (Tokyo) in Japan,
showcasing his international perspective.
The works he creates have been invited to be
exhibited not only in Japan, but also in
exhibitions and university events in Korea,
China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia
and India.
He has participated in global exhibitions not
only in Asia but also in Italy and the United
States.
As his works are themed around music, they can
be enjoyed by people of all nationalities,
languages and ages, and are especially popular
with children. |
