作品説明
作品タイトル Music Plant
2000 characters Music Plant is a media art piece that uses a PC and electronic instruments. It's a mysterious device that generates and plays back a new song based on any song played on an electronic piano or MIDI guitar.
As you start playing, a virtual plant displayed on the monitor begins to grow. Hitting a piano key creates a new branch, and the shape of the growing plant reflects your performance.
Music that uses a variety of notes, like jazz, tends to have more complex shapes, while nursery rhymes tend to have simpler shapes.
After you stop playing, the plant will redraw and the song will begin to play back.

As each branch is redrawn, the sound assigned to it will be played. However, this sound is not the same as the sound when the branch was created; it is converted according to certain rules.
The playback notes are inversely pitched, meaning that high notes are lowered and low notes are higher. It may be helpful to think of it as playing sheet music reflected in a mirror.

The entire piece is reversed, including not only the single-note melody but also the chords.
When playing chords, the order of the stacked notes is reversed.
For example, if you flip the intervals of a major chord, it becomes a minor chord. This is because a major chord made up of a minor third and a major third stacked is converted into a minor chord made up of a major third and a minor third stacked.
As a whole, major key pieces are converted into minor key pieces, and minor key pieces are converted into major key pieces, so bright song will be played back as melancholic song and melancholic song will be played back as bright song.
The more musical the original performance, the more musical the music that is returned when the music is redrawn. If you play it randomly, the music that is returned will also sound random.
Music Plant visualizes musical structure through note history, and demonstrating that even when notes are played in reverse pitch, essential elements of the original music remain intact.
