OverviewThis course aims to improve your all around ability to understand, write about, and discuss news topics appearing in the English mass media, especially newspapers, television, and the Internet. This course will also build up your vocabulary and increase your general knowledge as you study interesting and important current topics. Class ActivitiesEach class will usually be divided into two parts: l Textbook (ABC World News 7): We will watch a video, do exercises and drills, discuss the contents, and write a summary and opinion of each lesson. l Student reports: In small groups (about 5-6 members each), students will present a written report or project and the other members will take notes and discuss the contents. Reports(1) For your report, you will find 1-2 articles on the Internet, summarize them, and then express your opinion. The teacher will give you advice on where to find them. (2) You will present three reports during the semester. (3) Each report should be about 300 words long (about one A4 page typed) and also include an outline, graphic, or illustration (one A4 page). You will also make your own short quiz (T-F, etc.) and give the quiz to the other members of your group for practice. EvaluationEvaluation will be based on attendance (20%), classroom participation (20%), homework exercises 20%, two reports (20%) and weekly quizzes 20%. You will assemble all your homework reports and notes into one A4 folder (portfolio).
