フタオチョウ
Polyura eudamippus weismanni

　日本では沖縄本島でしか見られない勇壮なタテハチョウ。

沖縄本島では近年増加傾向にあるようで、かつては北部にしか見られなかったが、最近では南部まで分布を拡大しているようだ。

飛び方は雄大で、梢高く、紺碧の空を背景に舞う姿に心奪われた人も多い。

　大陸に広く分布する個体群に比べ、明らかに尾状突起が短く特異で、食樹や幼生期を詳しく比較することで、ひょっとしたら大陸のものとは別種なのではという説も囁かれている。

そうすると日本特産種が1種増えることになる。

　詳細な研究を困難にしているのが、本種が沖縄県指定の天然記念物に指定されていることだ。

しかし、我が国ではいつものことながら、単に指定しただけで、個体数調査や動態調査を行なっているという話はついぞ聞かない。

　もし独立種ということになれば、世界でも沖縄本島固有のチョウということで、さらに天然記念物としての価値が高まるような気もするのだが。

The Great Nawab --Polyura eudamippus weismanni
In Japan, this magnificent Nymphalid butterfly can only be seen in Okinawa-jima, southernmost island. Recently this species is expanding its range into southern part of the island. In decades ago, the distribution is restricted only in northern part of the island, however it is reported that this species flies in extreme southern part. Many butterfly lovers have been fascinated by its gorgeous and dynamic flight against subtropical deep blue sky.
This sub-species has shorter tails than those of another subspecies distributed in Asian continent. Some researchers demonstrate that close comparison of its foodplant and early stages may lead this subspecies to be treated as a “good species”. At that time, we would add one endemic species to the list of Japanese butterflies.
However, this species is listed as protected species by Okinawa Prefectural Government. So close study is hard to be carried even by academic faculties such as the researchers in the universities or colleges. As is often the case in Japan, local government is always willing to add some species to the list of protected species but is never earnest in research works.
If this sub-species becomes a good species after a careful study, it will increase the value of “protected species” all the more because this species can only be seen in such a small island in the world.

　どこにでもいる普通種。

時には獣糞などにハエのごとくたかっていて、採集する気にさえならないこともある不遇な種である。

まともに展翅して標本にした記憶がないほどの扱い。

図鑑の表紙になることも決して無ければ、そもそもカメラを向けてもらえることも少ないかも知れない。

アゲハチョウやタテハチョウに比べ、同じ蝶というのにこの扱いはひどいと思う。

　初夏の低山地で、熱心にヒメジョオンに吸蜜している姿を見つけた。

羽化したてで、裏面の黄金色の鱗粉の美しいこと。

思わず見惚れてしまった。

Thoressa varia
Very common skipper. Sometimes we see many imagoes of this species gather animal droppings just like flies. Few butterfly enthusiasts are willing to collect this species. In my memory I can not remember whether I have collected and mounted this species. This species never appear on the front page of magazines or journals. Perhaps this species has seldom been a model by nature photographers.
I happened to meet this species visiting flowers at nearby small hills in early summer. The underside of its wings was glittering just like a golden powder. I was very shocked by the unexpected beauty.

長い冬が終わり、黄砂と共に春がやってきた。

この地にスギ花粉はないはずだが、目が無性に痒い。

大陸性気候は温度変化が激しい。朝は随分冷え込んでいたが、昼を過ぎたらツリアブと共に蝶のダンスが始まった。

長い冬が終わり、黄色い蝶と共に春がやってきた。

Spring come, and the yellow sand came too.
There is no hay fever of Japanese cedar,
But eyes are itchy so badly.

As for the continental climate, a temperature change is intense.
It was cold very much in the morning,

スミナガシ
Dichorragia nesimachus

唯一の楽しみである週末に、２週連続で台風が襲来してしまった。

台湾では数日で一年分の雨が降り、日本でも台風９号として大きな被害を出した台風である。

いつも観察に訪れるフィールドでも、胸の高さにまで泥水が流れた場所もあり、足元の植生が全て流されているのはもちろん、イナズマチョウを何度か見かけた樹液の出る細い木も消えてしまっていた。

天気予報さえろくに得られない海外の生活に恐ろしさを覚えつつ、自然の驚異を感じると共に、大量の水が地形を変えた様に呆然としてしまった。

そんな中、川縁の砂利に舞い降りた本種の赤い口吻に萌えた。たとえ翅が欠けようと、一生懸命生きている姿に心癒されたひと時であった。

The Constable -- Dichorragia nesimachus
Two typhoons have attacked on weekend one after another. One of them caused great damage both in Taiwan and in Japan. The site where I frequently visit also was severely damaged. I found that the flood had grown high up to my chest and then the vegetation had been washed off completely in some place. The thin tree which gave off juicy sap and attracted many butterflies including Euthalia spp. has also been lost somewhere. I was surprised and at a loss, feeling that the devastating power of the nature. At that time I found one butterfly perched on the ground. Its striking scarlet proboscis caught my eye. I felt relieved by that sight.

ナガサキアゲハ
Papilio memnon

最近は温暖化の影響か分布が北上傾向にある本種。

沖縄では３０年前に絶滅したとされる伝説の「西表島の白いナガサキアゲハ」が有名であるが、最近、かつての西表島産のナガサキアゲハを思わせるほど白化が進んだ♀が沖縄本島で発見・撮影された。

前翅の白化の度合いを見ても、ここまで白化が進んだ個体は極めて稀と思われる。

Common Mormon -- Papilio memnon
Recently this species expands its range northward due to the climate change in Japan. It used to be very rarely encountered in Tokyo however it is often observed now. For those who are interested in Japanese butterflies, the conspicuous whitish female of this species, very rare “form” which was exclusively seen in Iriomote-jima, is quite familiar. That “form” has never been recorded more than thirty years there. But these days the whitish females of this species are sometimes seen in Okinawa-jima. They remind us of the “form” recorded formerly in Iriomote-jima.

シボリアゲハ
Bhutanitis lidderdalli

ヒマラヤの奇蹟とも言えるこのアゲハチョウは、雨期明けの9月から発生を始める。

姿が見られるのは決まって湿度の高い雲霧林の中に限られる。

通常は梢を飛び、なかなか下に降りてこない。

場所柄晴天に恵まれることなどほとんど無いが、晴れるとほとんど姿を見せず、姿を見せるのは雨と霧の中。

鮮血を思わせる紅色は、飛んでいるときには余り目立たない。

ユリの一種に翅を休めた時に、そっと近寄ってシャッターを切った。

Bhutan Glory -- Bhutanitis lidderdalli
Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii) is one of the most beautiful swallowtail butterflies in the world. The butterfly is mainly confined to the Himalayan Mountains from Bhutan to southwestern China via India and Myanmar. Usually this butterfly appears towards the end of the rainy season, around the end of August or beginning of September. The habitat is a cloud forest above 1500m (ca. 5500-6000ft.). It is very difficult to see this butterfly at close distance, because it flies high in the forest canopy. We are rarely blessed with sunlight in its habitat, and this butterfly typically can be found on a rainy or foggy day. Scarlet red is not so conspicuous when it is flying. When I found it settled on the leaf of Lily spp., I quietly came up to it and took this photo.

ウラギンシジミ

東京でも秋が深まってきた。

秋が深まると、だんだん目にする蝶の数も種類も減ってきて寂しくなってくるが、そんな時に目立つのがこのウラギンシジミだ。

銀白色の裏面をフラッシュのように明滅させながら、街路樹の梢にまとわりつくように飛ぶ姿を都心でもよく見かける。

これから寒い冬を成虫で乗り切らないといけない。この個体とも、春先にまた元気な姿で巡り合えるだろうか。

そんな思いを抱きつつシャッターを切った。

Sunbeam -- Curetis acuta
Now the winter is drawing near in Tokyo. Towards the end of fall, we see butterflies less frequently than summer. In this season, the butterfly which often catches our eye is Sunbeam (Curetis acuta). Sometimes we see this butterfly is flying on the top of trees along streets with its silvery underside wings flashing like a small thunder. This butterfly hibernates cold and bitter winter. I took this photo, hoping that I would see her again in next spring.
