For Immediate Release
Ludlowfs Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi) has been observed after 80-year absence!

Ludlow's Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi) was first discovered by famous English plant hunter Mr. Frank Ludlow and Mr. George Sheriff in far-eastern Bhutan in 1933-1934. It was described as a new species in 1942 by Gabriel. After the discovery, no additional record had been obtained. Many researchers and collectors have attempted to unveil the life of this swallowtail with no significant success. It is one of the most mysterious butterflies in the world.

Our society made a joint research with the Bhutanese government to search the country for this butterfly in August 2011, and we succeeded in observing this species in a deep valley located in far-eastern Bhutan, exactly at the same locality as the type specimen had been collected.

Before our success, one Bhutanese forest officer had obtained two specimens of this species in August 2009. However the record has not been published yet. Our fortune was the first confirmed record of rediscovery of Ludlow's Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi).

Our society invites a Bhutanese researcher to the annual meeting held in Tokyo this December. And the details of the findings will be presented there. (see Program)
