There are 19 speices in the genus of sparrow (according to "Wild Bird Identification Handbook" by Shinji Takano, Wild Bird Society of Japan, 1980). In Japan, there are two speices, one of which is a tree sparrow with a black throat and cheeks, and the other of which is a russet sparrow with a white throat and cheeks. It is the former that is usually seen in Japan.
On the other hand, it is a house sparrow that is normally seen in Europe and America. The sparrow which is shown in the top page of this site is also a house sparrow, which was taken in Australia.
