Night Heron
Night Heron

Adult. In a pond near the TOMIO-RIVER, Nara, Jan. 8, 1997.

There is something funny in the posture when this bird keeps still. In the TOMIO-RIVER in NARA, which I often visited, night herons took a rest on a dry riverbed together with teals this winter. While teals were so round and fat that they looked warm, night herons looked cold. Particularly on snowy days, they did so.
Juveniles have white spots on a black background, so that they look like another kind of bird.
If you lives in Osaka, go to Tennouji Zoo. Night herons are always in the place of flamingoes together with white egrets.
