リトルライトシンガーズの名前のもとになった曲です。
この歌は、ゴスペルの基本中の基本。
アメリカ南部のアフリカ系アメリカ人が通う幼稚園や、教会の子供クワイアで必ずと言って良いほど歌われているのではないでしょうか。
「私のこの小さな光を、輝かせましょう」というとてもシンプルで美しく前向きな歌詞と、覚えやすく、明るいメロディーは、歌った瞬問に元気がでそうですね。
人種差別を禁止し、人種差別に基づく法律(例えば、黒人と白人の学校、レストラン、ホテル、街、乗り物の乗る場所を分けさせたりする法律)の撤廃を求めた50年代から60年代の公民権運動でも、広く歌われた理由がわかるようですね。
かつて、私の敬愛するソウル・シンガー、ドン・ブライアントがゴスペル・シンガーに転向したとき、その理由を聞いてみました。
ブライアント氏のこたえは、「いいかい、ゴスペルで歌うことはみんな私自身の素晴らしい経験や思い出さ。神様から与えられた喜びに満ちているんだ。でも、他の歌はそうとは限らない。苦しかった思い出や、深く傷ついた経験を歌うことが多いんだ。」
歌を歌う時の、歌への心の込め方、感情移入の大きさを感じます。
歌うときに自分の口から発する言葉の重みを感じますね。
さて、歌いながらリズムを取ってみましょうか。
黒人音楽やロックを聞き慣れている人たちは、手拍子(やドラムのアクセント)を偶数拍(2,4,6,8拍)におくとカッコイイことに気づいているでしょう?
さて、では歌う時のアクセントも、手拍子と同じでしょうか?
基本的には、手拍子と逆で、奇数拍(1,3,5,ア拍)を強く歌います。
THISlittleLIGHTofMINE,LORD,と奇数拍を強く発音することを実行してみましょう。
また、アフリ力系アメリカ人の歌の特徴の一つとして、歌詞以外に合いの手のような言葉がたくさん入ることです。これらの言葉は、4ビートでは4拍目、8ビートの場合は7、8拍目の元来歌詞が入っていないところに入ります。
