           The Kappa Prays For Rain

Once upon a time , there was a village deep in the mountains.

To get to this village, travelers had to follow a long , narrow road through some marshes, and in those marshes, there lived a terrifying creature called a kappa.

The kappa was a yellow-green, hairless creature that looked like a cross between a fish, a turtle and a monkey. It lived in the water's edge, pulling them in and drowing them.

One day, a priest passed along the muddy road. He had heard about the kapp living ther and was careful where he walked. He carried some cucumbers in his bag. An old women had told him that the kapp liked to eat cucumbers, much more than it liked to eat humans.

The mist was thick and the priest could not see the road very clearly. Sometimes he would accidentally step off the edge of the road and slide knee-deep unto the muddy water with a loud splash. Afraid that the kapp would hear, he hurried along as quickly as he could.

It was a couple of hours later that the kappa attacked.

The priest had stopped to rest, and was sitting in the middle of the road , when he fell something cold and wet grab his ankle. It started pulling him down into the black water.

frantically, he reached for his bag and pulled out a cucumber, holding it above him as he was pulled underwater.

He felt the kappa let go.

The priest surfaced, gasping for air, He continued to hold up the cucumber.

There came a whisper frpm behind some reeds* "give me that cucunber and I will spare your life.

"I will give it to you when I get to the road". said the priest and climbed back onto the road . He stood there, wet and cold.

"I'll put it down here, together with three more cucumbers " he called out.

He put down the four cucumbers and the kappa appeared out of the mist.

It picked up cucumber, looked at it carefully, and ate it.
The priest watched it.

" Why do you kill people? Why dp you hate them so much? " .he asked.
The kappa didn't answer.

" look, I have one more cucumber here. Answer my question, and I will give it to you .

A sad look came into the kappa's eyes.

I don' t hate people," it said, " I hate mayself. I hate being a kappa. I'm not human, I 'm not a fish, I'm not even turtle. I'm nothing and I'm alone.
Sometimes the loneliness is too much " .

The kappa then looked at the priest . " Tell me , how can I become human ? " it asked.

The priest was surprised by the kappa's question and felt pity. "If you become good, " he said "if you stop killing people and start helping people ? you will be reborn as a human being ."

"Why should I do that "? said the kapp anrily. "Why should I start helping people ?

They have never done snything for me . They hate me , they say I'm ugly and unnatural and chase me away from their villages."

"But if you are kind to people who are not kind to you < that makes your kindness even more special. You need no reason to be kind ".

" What would you know ? " snapped the kappa and picking up the cucumbers, he disappeared into the mist.

The priest stood there, thinking . He promised he would pray for this sad little creature .

The following summer was very hot and very dry. Day after day , week after week, month after month , there was no rain and the water in the area dried up .

Plants died , animals died and the people suffered.

Everyday, the people in the village prayed to the gods for rain. But the gods did not listen to them and the hot and drys continued. Piople started to die of thirst.

One day, when it was especially hot. the kappa was seen entering the village.

The marshes where it lived had dried up long befor, and the people in the village thought it had died.

A crowd of people went to meet the kappa.

"Myseable creature, what are you doing here ?" asked one man.

"I have come to help you pray for rain."

There was a pause. The people were surprised.

Then a woman in the crowd yelled out,
"It's a trick. The kappa's here to kill us and suck out our innards".

" It's the one who stopped the rain," shouted another woman, " I'm sure of it ".

Everyone looked at each other and nodded in agreement, although no one was quite sure why the kappa would go to all the trouble of causing a drought.

" No, I have come to help you , said the kappa.
" I want to help you pray for rain".

"Kill it before it kills us all," yelled one pf the men.

The crowd roared. They ran toward the kappa and started punching it and kicking it and beating it with clubs.

The kappa did not try to fight back.

When the kappa was almost dead, the people stopped .

" Let me pray with you ," whispered the kappa, as its black blood spread across the ground .

"It's still a trick ," said one of a men. "Tie it up and leave it in the sun. It will die of heat and thirst. It doesn't deserve to die quickly. "

They tied it up and left it there to die.

The kappa had been and kicked and beaten by the people pf the village until it was almost dead, but still it prayed to the gods to give the people rain.

For many days, it sat there in the dust in the hot sun , looking up at the cloudless sky.

It thought about what the priest had told it months ago . Every minute it was awake, it prayed .

It promised to give up its life in exchange for rain . The people in the village watched it pray, first with fear, then with wonder , and finally with admiration.

One morning, a woman went to the kappa and knelt in front of it . "I thougtht you were an evil creature ", she said, "butIhave watched you pray and now I know that I was wrong.

Will you forgive me and let me sit beside you and pray? "

The kappa did not answer. It was praying so hard that it did not even notice she was there .

The woman quietly moved next to the kappa and joined in its prayers.

Over the next few days, one by one , all the people of the village came and joined the kappa.

The gods watched this and felt pity. Soon rain clouds appeared over the village and huge drops of water begin to fall.

The villagers were overjoyed . They danced and sang and hugged each other as the rain continued to fall. But when, fainally, they turned to kappa, they found it was dead.

Many years later , the priest returned to the village. The people there welcomed him and told him the story about the kappa.

"I spoke to it a long time ago ", said the priest sadly after he had heard the story to its end. He then told his own story about what the kappa had said to him years ago.
" He just wanted to be one of you," he said.

Everyone in the village felt ashamed when they heard this.

"We would like to do something for it, but what can we do now that its dead?" asked one man.

"You can build a grave for it in the marshes. It will be reborn as a human being and will one day, many years from now, come here to your village to live. Welcome him when he coms."

So the people of the village went to the maeshes and built a small grave there. They took great csre of it , keeping it clean and leaving fresh cucumbers in front of it each day.

Each summer, they would gather around the grave and pray that the kappa would be reborn as a man.

they waited patiently for the day when he would come to live among them , as one of them.
