 The Rolling Rice Ball
Once upon a time, there was an old woodcutter, who lived by himselfe in a cottage deep in rhe mountains.
昔々、山深い所に、年老いた樵夫が一人で住んでいました。
Every morning, the old man would make some rice balls for his lunch and set off into the forest to cut some wood.
その樵夫のおじいさんは、毎朝早く起きて、お昼の弁当のおにぎりを幾つか作ると、腰にぶら下げて、山へ木を切りに出かけました。
One day, after a busy morning, he wiped the sweat from his brow and sat down on a tree stump to eat his rice balls.
その日、精出して働いたおじいさんは「ぼつぼつ昼にするか、、」と、仕事の手を止めました。腰にぶら下げていた手ぬぐいをとって、額の汗をぬぐうと、どっこらしょと木の切り株に腰を下ろしました。
But as he took one of the rice balls out of its bamboo wrapping, a sudden noise - the snapping of a twig - made him look up sharply and drop the rice ball.
おじいさんは風呂敷を開けて、中からおにぎりの包みを取り出すと、包んであった竹の皮をとって、おにぎりを一つ、つまみあげました。
その時、不意にパチッと小枝の折れたような音がしました。「何だろう？」おじいさんは音のした方を見上げました。そのとたん、おにぎりがおじいさんの手から転げ落ちてしまいました。
It rolled quickly down the steep slope.
そして、急な坂をどんどん転がっていきました。
"Oi ! Stop ! " shouted the old man, as he chased it down the slope, but the rice ball - unsurprisingly - wouldn't listen and continued to roll down rhe hill.
「オイ！こら！待て！」おじいさんも転げ落ちそうになりながらおにぎりを追いかけました。
「捕まってたまるか、、」と言うように、おにぎりはますます速く転がって行きました。 (2012.7.26.)

The old man was quick. Soon he had caught up with the rolling rice ball.
おじいさんは急いでおにぎりを追いかけます。やっとおにぎりに追いつきました。
"Aha! " he cried . "Now I'v got you "
「さあ捕まえたぞ」
Hands outstretched , he threw himself at it. But at that moment, it disappeared
down a hole, and the old man crashed to the ground, his hands empty.
そう叫んで、おじいさんは両手を伸ばしておにぎりを取ろうとしました。しかし、その時、おにぎりはそばにあった穴へと転げ落ちていきました。
両手をのばしたまま、地面にうつぶせに倒れ込んでしまいました。おじいさんの手には泥がついているだけでした。
"Dammn ! " he muttered as he picked himself off the ground and dusted himself off .
「チェッ！」おじいさんは舌打ちすると、起き上がって、身体に着いた泥を払い落としました。
Disappointed, he started walking back up the sloop but the sound of a small,
high-pitched voice stopped him .
がっかりしたおじいさんは、「ヤレヤレ」と、坂を上って戻ろうとしました。その時、どこからか甲高い、小さな声が聞こえてきました。（2012.7.2.）

"Excuse me, "it said .
「すみません、、」その声はそう言っているように聞こえました。
The old man looked around to see who had spoken, but there was no one nearby.
「はて、誰かいるのかな？」とおじいさんは辺りを見回しました。誰も見当たりません。
"Down here," said the voice.
The old man looked down. Next to his foot was a mouse, looking up at him.
「ここですよ、下ですよ」と呼ぶ声がしました。おじいさんは足下を見ました。そこには一匹のネズミが居て、小さな黒い目をキラキラさせながらおじいさんを見上げていました。
" You're the one who gave us the rice ball, aren't you?" the
mouse said " You're the one who dropped it down our hole ? .
「あなたが私たちにおにぎりを下さったんですね」、、
「あなたですね、私たちの穴におにぎりを落としてくれたのは、、、」
そう言ってネズミは嬉しそうにニコニコしていました。
The old man nodded dumbly. He had never heard a mouse speak before, and
so understandably ,he was shocked .
おじいさんは黙ってうなずきました。ネズミがしゃべるなんてことは今まで見たことも聞いたこともありません。おじいさんはびっくりしてしまい、口もきけませんでした。

"Thank you", said the mouse with a great smile. It's not often
that human beings are so kind to us . Hold onto my tail, and I'l take you
to a place where you'll be rewarded".
「有り難うございました」ネズミは満面の笑みをうかべて言いました。
「私たちネズミに、あなたのように親切にしてくれる人は、めったにありません、私の尻尾につかまって下さい、あなたにお礼がしたいのです。その場所にお連れいたします」
Pinch me , I must be dreaming ," said the old man in disbelief.
「わしの頬をつなってみておくれ、夢をみているんじゃないだろうな」
" Tsk, Tsk, you're not dreaming. Now, quickly, hold onto my tail".
said the mouse. The old man took it cautiously, muttering, "What am
I supposted to do with your tail?.
「チッチッ、、夢ではございません、さあさあ、私の尻尾につかまって下さい」
おじいさんは何か独り言をブツブツ言いながら、恐る恐るネズミの尻尾をつかみました。
「お前の尻尾につかまれって、いったいどういう事なんだ、何をしようと言うんだい？」
" Hang on ", the mouse cried and started running so fast that
the old man flew through the air behind it, clinging desperately onto its
tail. The mouse ran as fast as the wind, and the forest swept part them
in a blur of green and brown.
「つかまって！」そう叫ぶと、もの凄い速さで走りはじめました。びっくりしたおじいさんは、宙に舞い上がり、ネズミの尻尾をつかんだまま宙を飛んでいきました。
ネズミは疾風のように森の中を駆け抜けていくので、おじいさんの目には、周りの景色ははっきりとは見えず、ただ緑と茶色のぼやけた色にみえました。
Then all of a sudden, they were underground, running through the darkness,
through that twisted left and right, up and down, and spiraled round and
round. The roots of trees brushed against the old man 's face and dirt
filled his nostrils as they flew alomg.
突然、ネズミが地面の穴に飛び込みました。真っ暗闇の穴の中を、左に曲がり、右に曲がり、上ったり、下がったりしながら通り抜けていきます。木の根がおじいさんの顔をかすめたり、上がった土埃が、おじいさんの鼻の穴をつまらせたりしました。
After a while, the mouse skidded to a stop, and the old man fell to the
ground, spluttering. He had no idea where he was or how he could return
to the surface.
しばらくして、ネズミは横滑りして停まりました。その拍子に、おじいさんは地面に転げ落ちました。そして、口に入ったドロをペッペッとはき出しました。おじいさんは、今、自分がどこにいるのか、どうやって地上に戻ればいいのかが、さっぱり見当もつきませんでした。（2012.8.23.)

In front of him was a door in the wall of the tunnel. It was a magnificent wooden stracture, covered with beautifully carved images of mice.
少し心を落ち着けて、おじいさんはあたりを見回ました。おじいさんの目の前にはトンネルを仕切る壁があり、そこにドアがついていました。そのドアは木製で、一面にネズミの彫刻が施されているそれはそれは見事な物でした。
"Here we are . Follow me ," said the mouse.
"Welcome to my home".
「さあ着きました。我が家へようこそ、私に着いてきて下さい、ご案内いたします」
The old man followed the mouse through the doorway and into a long passageway.
Lit by flickering torches. A number of corridors branched to the left and
right. As he passed them, the old man could see groups of mice beady little
eyes, whispering among themselves , then following him at distance.
ネズミはドアを開け、おじいさんを中へと導きました。長い通路が奥へと続いていました。その両側には、所々に松明が置かれて、あたたかい灯りがゆらゆらと揺れながら辺りを照らしていました。
その道を進んでいくと、右側にも左側にもいくつかの枝分かれした道がありました。
おじいさんは案内してくれるネズミについて先へ先へと歩いていきました。途中、あちこちにネズミたちが集まっているのを見かけました。ネズミたちは可愛い目をビーズのようにキラキラさせて、興味深げにおじいさんを見ています。それから、小声で話し合いながら、少し離れて、ゾロゾロとおじいさんの後についてきました。
They walked through a maze of tunnel, coming at last to a great cavern,
filled with wooden boxes.
迷路のような地下の道を進んでいくと、急にパッと開けた広い場所に出ました。そこには木の箱がいっぱい積んでありました。(2012.8.30.)

There, on a wooden throne , sat a large mouse with a crown of twigs on
his head .
髙く積み上げられた木の箱を背にして、中央にすばらしい彫刻を施した木製の玉座があり、小枝で飾られた王冠を被った大きなネズミが威厳のある顔で座っていました。
"So it is you , " said this mouse solemnly, " who gave us
this rice ball."
「ああ、あなたですか、このおにぎりを下さったのは、、」と、ネズミはよく響く重々しい声で言いました。
He lifted the rice ball in his pow for all the mice to see." "Behold,
here is a rare gift from the tailless world. For this, we thank you. See
these boxes around you .
それから、そのおにぎりを総てのネズミが見えるように高々と掲げて、こう続けました。
「皆よく見よ、これが尻尾のない国からのめったにない贈り物だ」、「我々はこの贈り物を下さったことに対して、あなたにお礼を申し上げる」。
They are each filled with gold . One of them is yours,".
「ここに積まれている木の箱にはどれにも小判がいっぱい詰まっている」
この一つをお礼としてあなたに差し上げよう」王様はこともなげに言いました。
"Thank you ," said the old man, " but I do not deserve this."
「有り難いことです、でも私はそんなたいしたことをしていません」と、おじいさんは正直に言いました。
" That is for us to decide. Now, take it."
「それを決めるのは私です、遠慮せずに一つ持っていきなさい」
So the old man took a box. full of gold , and a mouse led him back to the
open air.
おじいさんは小判のいっぱい詰まった箱をもらうことにしました。一匹のネズミが前に進み出て、こう言いました。
「地上へご案内いたします」
おじいさんはそのネズミに案内されて無事に地上へ戻ってくることが出来ました。

「やれ、嬉しや」､一安心したおじいさんは、やっと落ち着きを取り戻しました。と、同時に、小判を手に入れた嬉しさがわき上がってきました。
Immediatery, he ran to the nearby village, shouting.
"Look what I'v got ! Gold, gold, and more gold". And, being a
generous man, he divided the gold between all the villager's, telling them
agein and agein how the mice had given it to him.
「見てくれ！小判だ！小判だ！こんなにもお宝があるぞ！」
「わしは、沢山の小判を手に入れたんだぞぅ！」そう叫びながら、おじいさんは村の道を駆け回りました。あちらの家から、こちらの家から、何事だろうと村人たちが出てきました。
おじいさんはとても気前がよかったので、村人たち全部に小判をあげました。そして、どうやって小判を手に入れたのか、ネズミたちのことを、繰り返し繰り返し話ました。
There was much cellebration in the village, and yet there was one man who
was not happy. he was a greedy shopkeeper, and he wanted more of the moce's
gold.
村人たちは大喜びでみんな集まって、お祝いをすることになりました。
ご馳走をいっぱい造り、酒を持ち寄って、飲めや、歌えの大騒ぎです。そんな中で、一人だけ仲間に入らずにいる男がいました。とても欲深な商人です。
"That stupid old woodcutter only took one box of gold". he thought.
なぜ、もっと沢山のネズミの小判を取って来なかったのかと、不満でなりません。
"L will have them all".
「あの老いぼれの樵夫は、小判の入った箱を、たった一つだけしかもらってこなかった、俺なら全部取ってきてやる」と、ブツブツ言っていました。
So the greedy shopkeeper found out where the mouse hole was, prepared a
raice ball roughly down into the hole.
次の日、欲深な商人は、おにぎりを作り、それを持って、山へ入っていきました。あちこち探し回って、やっとネズミの穴を見つけました。商人はその穴にギュウギュウとおにぎりを押し込みました。そして、ネズミの現れるのを待ちました。
He waited for a mouse to appear and when it did he grabbed it by the tail,
shouting,
ほどなくしてネズミが現れると、商人はネズミの尻尾をギュッとつかんで、こう叫びました。
"You dirty rat, take me to your leader now if you want to keep your ugly little tail. "
「この薄汚いネズミ野郎め！お前の尻尾を取られたくなかったら、さっさと俺を親分の所へ連れて行け！」 (2012.9.20.)

The terrified mouse ran, the shopkeeper holding tightly onto its tail.
おびえたネズミは必死の思いで駆け出しました。これを離してなるものかと、欲深な商人はネズミの尻尾を握りしめていました。
In a short while, they stood before the large mouse with the crown of twigs
on his head.
すぐに二人は小枝の冠を被った大きなネズミの前にやってきました。
"What is your business here, " boomed the large mouse, but the
greedy shopkeeper did not answer. He was too busy looking at the boxes
filled with gold.
「何か用か？」ネズミの王様は大声で怒鳴りました。しかし、欲張りの商人は小判がいっぱい入った箱の山に目を奪われていて、何も答えませんでした。
"Mine, all mine " he whispered to himself, twisting his fingers
and sweating with desire. "But how am I going to steal the gold with
all these mice here?"
「全部俺の物だ！」欲に目がくらんだ商人は、興奮のあまり、汗びっしょりになりながらせわしなく指を動かしています。でも、こんなに多くのネズミに囲まれた中で、どうやってお宝を全部取り上げてやろうか、、、
He had an idea.
「そうだ！いいことを思いついたぞ！」
"MIIIIAAAOOOW ! " cried the old man.
「ニャア～オ」商人はありったけの声を張り上げて猫の鳴き真似をしました。
There were a few seconds of silence . No one moved.
一瞬、あたりはシ～ンと静まりかえりました。身動きする者さえありません。
Then there was chaos, as all the mice ran for the door, pushing and shoving in fear, trying to get away from what they thought was s giant cat in disguise.
「うわ～、、」何ともいえない大きな声がわき上がったかと思うと、ネズミたちは大混乱に陥ってしまいました。。
我先にとネズミたちが戸口に向かって突進しました。押し合い圧し合い、倒れたネズミを踏んづけて逃げ惑っています。商人を、大きな猫が変装しているのだと勘違いして、恐れおののいてしまったのです。(2012.9.27.)

Only the large maouse stayed . He stood proudly in the center of cavern, anger flashing in his eyes.
ネズミの王様だけが、その場に毅然とした姿で立っていました。怒りのために、その目は炎のように燃えていました。
Then suddenly the light went out.
突然、灯りがパッと消えて、漆黒の闇に包まれました。
The shopkeeper stood alone in the pitch darkness, surrounded by the boxes of gold.
商人は、小判の詰まった箱に囲まれたまま、真っ暗闇の中に取り残されてしまいました。
With a terrible, sinking feeling in his stomach, he realized that he had no way of getting out of the mouse hole without a maouse as a guide. He called for help, but there was no answer. He was buried alive.
欲深な商人もやっと自分が置かれている現実に気がつきました。ネズミの助け無しでは、この穴から抜け出す事は出来ません。
「助けてくれ！」
「わしが悪かった！」
「何でもお前たちの言うことを聞くから、助けてくれ～！」
大声で叫びましたが、自分の 声が空しく響くだけで、返事がありません。そのうち、商人は声も出なくなってしまいました。
シ～ンと静まりかえった中で、商人は力尽きてしまいました。
