When lieutenant Sam Stevens was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam, he called his parents from San Francisco.
サム スチーブンス中尉は戦いを終え本国に帰還することが出来ました。サンフランシスコに着いた彼は早速、両親に☎をしました。
"Maim and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a
really good friend I'd like to bring home".
「お父さん、お母さん、ただいま帰ったよ、あのね、ちょっとお願いが有るんだ、、親友と一緒なんだけど家に連れて帰ってもいい？」（2016.8.19.)
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
" Sure," they replied.
"We'd love to meet him."
「勿論だよ、私たちも彼と会うのを楽しみにしているよ」
"There's something you should know, " Sam continued.
" He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting.
「あのね、ちょっと話しておきたいことがあるんだけど、、彼はね、戦場でひどい怪我をしたんだ、地雷を踏んでね、、」（2016.8.26.)
He stepped on land mine and lose an arm and a leg. his guy really means a lot to me , and he has nowhere else to go. I want him to come live with us.
「彼は戦場で地雷を踏んでしまい、片腕と片足を失ってしまったんだ。それからね、彼は僕にとってはかけがえのない人なんだ、他に行く場所もないから、僕と一緒に家で暮らしたいんだ」
"I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live
."
「可愛そうな話だね、サム、私たちは彼のためにどこか住むところを探してあげることが出来ると思うよ」 （2016.9.2.)
" No, Mom and Dad,I want him to live with us.I'd be nothing without
him!"
「違う、ちがう、お父さん、僕は彼と一緒に暮らしたいんだ、彼がいなかったら僕は何にも出来ないんだ」
サムは非常に興奮してそう言いました。
Sam said the father, "I understand your feelings about this friend
of yours. But, you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such problems
would be an awful lot of work for us. You know, there are organizations
and things that look after guys like that. I think he'll be OK".
「サム、お前の友達に対する気持ちは、お父さんもよく理解出来るよ、でも、お前は私たちに頼んでいることがどんなに大変な事かお前はよく分かっていないんだ。こういう問題を抱えた人と一緒に暮らすことは、私たち家族にとって大変な負担になることなんだよ、少し冷静に考えてみようよ、お前の友達のような人達のお世話を専門にしている団体がいくつかあるから、そういう所で相談してみようよ、彼のことは大丈夫だと思うよ」
At that point, Sam hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from
him .
その途端にガチャッと受話器を置く音がしました。そしてそれが最後で、彼からの連絡は途絶えてしまいました。
A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco
police. Sam had died falling from s building, they were told. The police
believed he had killed himself. The parents were terribly sad and flew
to San Francisco.
数日後、突然サンフランシスコ警察から電話がありました。「サムがビルから転落して死んだ」という連絡でした。
On arriving at the police station, they were taken to identify the body of their son. They recognized him , but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know , Sam had only one arm and one leg.
両親はすぐに飛行機でサンフランシスコへと向かいました。警察署についた両親に告げられた言葉は、「サムが自ら柵を乗り越えてビルから身を投げたこと、警察としては自殺と断定している」ということでした。
身元確認のために遺体安置所に連れて行かれた両親は、サムの身体を見て驚きました。そこに横たわっているサムは隻腕、隻足、だったのです。（2016.9.16.)
