His Father's Eyes

A young man named Peter lived alone with his father.
ピーターという若者が、お父さんと二人だけで暮らしていました。

Peter's father always took very good care of him. He made him healthy food and took care him when he was sick. They talked about everything and were very close.
ピーターのお父さんはいつもピーターのことを心にかけていて、とても良く面倒をみていました。健康に気をつけて食事作りをし、ピーターの体調不良の時にはすぐに気付いて酷くならないうちに治すように気をつかっていました。二人は何事も話し合うという、ひとも羨むような仲の良い親子でした。

Perter was grateful for all his father did for him and for his father's presence sat his football games. cheering him on. Although Peter didn't get to play most of the time, his father always continued to cheer.
ピーターはいつもお父さんに感謝していました。特にピーター0の入っているフットボールの試合には必ず見に来てくれることを有り難く思っていました。
ピーターが試合に出る事はほとんど無かったのですが、それでも父親は毎回、まいかい、スタンドに陣取って、大声で応援し続けていました。


And when Peter got home after a game, his father always praised him.

家に帰ると、いつも「ピーター!よくやったぞ!」と言って褒めてくれるのが常でした。 (2016.6.24)

Peter loved football and was determined to try his best at energy practice.
ピーターはフットボールが大好きでした。そして、練習には全力で当たり、一度も気を抜くことはありませんでした。

All through high school he never missed a practice or a game, but he only got to play for a few minutes on the rare occasions that his team had a big lead.
もちろん練習にも試合にも欠席したことははありません。それでも、高校生活を通じて、彼が試合に出してもらえたのはほんの数回、それも味方が大量リードしたときの最後に数分間だけでした。

When Peter went to college, he tried out for the football team. Even though he couldn't play very well, the coach accepted him because he put his heart and soul into every practice. He also provided the other members with the spirit and energy they badly needed.

ピーターは高校を卒業して大学に進みました。ピーターのフットボールに対する情熱が衰えると言うことはありませんでした。ピーターはすぐにフットボールチームのトライアウトを受けました。彼はあまり上手には出来ませんでしたが、彼のゲームに対する取り組み方、骨身を惜しまずに駆け通す姿勢をみて、コーチは彼の入部を許可することにしました。ピーターはチームのメンバー達が元気をなくしてしまった時もいつも元気でした。そしてチームに必要なやる気を取り戻すのに大いに役立ったのです(2016.7.8.)

Petter always kept trying and never missed a practice during his four years at college, but it was just like in high school; he only got to play a few times.
ピーターは練習を一日も休むことはありませんでした。その上練習にはいつも全力で取り組んでいました。でも高校時代と同様に試合に出してもらえたのはほんの数回だけでした

One day at end of his senior football season, he ran onto the practice field and the coach handed him a message.
ピーターも大学4年生にあんりました。フットボールシーズンも終わりに近づいたある日のことです、練習中にピーターはコーチに呼ばれました。ピーターはグランドの隅に立っているコーチのところへ走って行きました。すつとコーチは黙ってピーターに一枚の紙を手渡しました。

Peter read it and became totally silent. He said quietly to the coach.
そこには父親の死の知らせは書かれていました。ピーターは驚きのあまり、口もきけませんでした。しばらくしてやっとこれだけのことを言うことが出来ました。

"My father died in an accident this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today? "
「父が今朝、交通事故で死にました。コーチ、今日の練習は休んでも良いですか?」

The coach put his arm gently around his shoulders and said ,
"Take the rest of the week off. And don't even plan to come back for the game on Saturday".

コーチは優しく彼の肩に腕を回して「今週いっぱい休みなさい、土曜日の試合には戻ってこなくてもいいよ、元気を出すんだよ!」 (2016.7.15.)

Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the third quarter, when the team was ten points behind, Petter quietly slipped into the locker room and put on his uniform. The coach and the other players were very surprised to see him back so soon.

試合当日の土曜日になりました。第三クゥオーターで10点もリードされている状況でピーターのチームは意気もあがりません。戻っきたピーターは誰もいないロッカールームに入ると、大急ぎで自分のユニフォームに着替えるとグランドへ駆け出しました。

ピーターを見て、コーチも仲間達もビックリしました。
「父親が亡くなったのに、もう戻ってきたのか」誰もがそう思いました。

" Coach, please let me play. I've just got to play today," said Petter. He asked the coach again and again. Finally, feeling sorry for him, the coach gave in.
"All right," he said.
"You can go in."

「コーチ、お願いです、僕を試合に出して下さい!今日だけはどうしても出たいんです!父のために出たいんです」
そう言って何度も何度も頼みました。コーチはピーターの言って居ることの意味がよく分かりませんでしたが、ピーターの真剣な顔を見ていると可愛そうになって、、
「よし、分かった!頑張ってこい!」
と、ピーターの背中をポンと叩きました。ピーターは全力でグランド内へ駆け込んでいきました。

Surprisingly, Petter ease doing everything right. He ran, he passed, and he blocked. His team began to win. In the closing seconds of the game, he caught a pass and ran all the way across the goal line to get the winning points. The fans went wild. His team carried him around on their shoulders.
試合再開です。ピーターは他の誰よりも多く走りました。ボールをキャッチすると素早く味方にパスを送りました。あまり大きくない身体で、怯むこと無く大きな相手に突進してブロックしました。ゲームの流れが変わり始めました。試合終了まであとわずか、ブロックをしにくる相手をステップでかわし、独走でゴールラインを駆け抜けました。6点ゲット、逆転です。観衆は歓喜してピーターを称えました。チームメートはピーターを肩車してワッショイ、わっしょいとお祭り騒ぎです。(2016.7.29.)

After the stands had emptied and the team had left the locker room, the coach came to him and said, "Petter, you were great ! How did you do it?" He looked at the coach, and said,
"Well, you know my dad died. What you didn't know is that he was blind. " Petter awallowed hard and forced a smile, "Dad came to all my games, but I believe today was the first time he could see me play".


スタンドの興奮も治まり、人影もまばらになって、静かに夕闇が辺りを包み始めました。チームメート達もみんなロッカールームに引き上げて、ピーターだけがゆっくりと帰り支度をしていました。そこへコーチが笑顔で近寄って来て声をかけました。
「ピーター!良くやった、最高だ!君にはあんな力が」あったんだな」
「コーチ、私の父が死んだことは知っていますよね、でも、父が盲目だったことはご存じ無かったでしょう?」

ピーターはそう言って、じっと涙をこらえ、無理に笑顔を作ろうとしました。そして、こう続けました。

「父は私たちの試合は必ず見に来てくれていました。でも、父が私のプレイを見ることができたのは今日が初めてだと思います。私はそう信じてゲームをしたのです」。(2016.8.5.)
