On a flight from Dallas to New York, a white woman of middle age found
herself sitting next to a black man .
ダラス発ニューヨーク行きの飛行機の機内での出来事です。
精一杯着飾った感じの太った白人の女性が席一杯に陣取ったという格好で座っていました。その隣にはつつましやかな黒人の男性が物静かに座っていました。
She called a stewardess over to complain about her seat.
乗客の様子や荷物の状態を見て廻るためにスチュワーデスが一人ひとりに声をかけています。スチュワーデスが自分の所まで繰るのを待ちきれず、この白人女性が大声を上げて呼びつけました。
" What seems to be the problem? " asked the stewardess.
「何かお困りのことがございますか？」スチュワーデスが優しく尋ねました。
"Can't you see ? " she said, You've sat me next to a black man.
I can't possibly sit next to him. Find me another seat! "
「見れば分かるでしょ！私は黒人の隣に座らされているのよ、私の席を変えて頂戴」
"Pleas calm down " the stewardess replied. "This flight
is very full, but I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll go and see if we have
any seats available in business class or first class"
スチュワーデスは静かな声で言いました。
「お客様、落ち着いて下さい、この便は大変混み合っております、でも．ビジネスクラスかファーストクラスにに席があるかどうか見て参ります」（2016.4.22.)

The woman gave a mean look at the surprised black man beside her .
何事だろうと、意味もつかめずポカンとした表情で座っている男性を女性は勝ち誇ったような態度で眺めていました。
Many of the surrounding passengers were also suprised.
周りの乗客達は思ってもみなかった前世代のような出来事に驚いて事の成り行きを見つめていました。
A few minutes later the stewardess returned with good news, which she delivered
to the woman, who could not help but look at the people around her with
a self-satisfied smile.
数分後、スチュワーデスが笑みを浮かべて戻って来ました
「お席がゴザイマシタ」女性は自分の言い分が通ったと思い、満足げに周りを見回しました。
"I'm sorry, but as I suspected, economy is full. I spoke to the services
director, and business class is also full. However, we do have one seat
in first class." Before the woman had a chance to answer, the stewardess
continued, "It is most unusual to make this kind of change, but I
have special permission from the captain. He agreed that it is not fair
for someone to be forced to sit next to such an awful person."
「ゴメンナサイ、思った通りエコノミーは満席でした。パーサーに話しましたが、ビジネスクラスにも空きはございません。ファーストクラスに一席だけ空席がゴザイマシタ」
女性が何か言おうとしましたが、スチュワーデスは続けました。
「こんなことはめったにございませんが、機長が申しますには、酷い乗客の隣に座らされてず～っとフライトを続けなければならないお客様がいるとしたらそれは公平ではない、特別の許可を出すから席を替わっていただきなさい」とのことです。
The stewardess then turned to the black man and said, "So if you'd
like to collect your things, sir, I have your seat ready for you ."
At that point, the surrounding passengers stood up and cheered while the
man walked to the front of the plane.
それからスチュワーデスは黒人男性の方に振り向いてこう言いました。
「お客様、よろしければお荷物をまとめて下さい。お席の準備はしてございます」
どうなることやらと見守っていた乗客達の間から拍手が起こりました。その歓声の中をスチュワーデスに案内されて黒人男性が軽く手を上げながら前方へと歩いて行きました。(2016.4.29.) 終わり
