Mouse Wrestling
Once upon a time , there lived an old man and old woman who were poor .
One morning , the old man was walking through the forest , when he heard
a grunting sound from behind some trees . He went to have a look .
He found a small clearing in the forest , and in the middle of this clearing
, there were the mice , wrestling . One mouse was very big and powerful
while the other mouse was very small and weak . As the old man watched
. the big mouse threw the small mouse to the ground again and again .
"I know that mouse " , thought the old man , wondering where
he had seen the small mouse before .
" Ah , I remember now . He lives in our house ".
The big mouse threw the small mouse to the ground again . " Poor mouse"
thought the old man . " He can never win . The other mouse is too
powerful " .
When he returned home that evening, the old man told the old woman about
what he had seen .
"The mouse is weak because he is poor and hungry , like us "
, said the old woman . "We can't let this continue . The mouse will
die if we don't help him ".
"But what can we do ?"
" We can make some rice cakes for him . That will give him some strength."
So the old woman brought out the rice that had been saving for New Year's Day and made some rice cakes .
She put them outside for the mouse to eat .
The next day , as the old man walked through the forest , he heard the
grunting noise again . He went to have a look.
Things had changed since the day before. Now the small mouse was throwing the big mouse across the clearing .
" Why are you suddenly so o\powerful?" said the big mouse . "What
have you been doing ? "
" The people I live with gave me some rice cakes ," said the
little mouse proudly .
" L want some rice cakes too . "
" There is no more rice left . The old man and old woman used all
the rice they had . Now they don't have any more rice for New Year's .
"
" It is a beautiful thing that they did, " said the big mouse
.
" The people I live with would never do that big mouse .
Their eyes filled with tears .
Then the big mouse had an idea .
" I know " he said . " We'll go to my house . I live with
the head of village , and he has lots of rice. We'll take his rice and
give it to your old man and old woman . Then they can make rice cakes for
us , and they'll have enough rice for themselves too . "
So they ran back to the big mouse's house and took most of the rice to
the old man and the old woman .
The old couple was overjoyed when they received the gift , and they immediately
made rice cakes for the two mice .
The two mice and the old couple spent the rest of the year together very happy and very full.
