Insect Stamp of MontserratInsect Stamp of MontserratMontserrat is a volcanic island located in the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea and is a British overseas territory. It was discovered by Columbus on his second voyage on November 3, 1493, and named "Santa Maria de Montserrat" after the Montserrat Monastery in Spain. Spain did not settle there at first, but instead, interest from England and France increased, and in 1625, King Charles I granted England a patent to allow colonization. In 1949, Irish political prisoners were transferred to Montserrat. Many buildings have been destroyed by the large eruption of the active volcano Soufriere Hills (1,050m) since 1995. The area is 102 square kilometers and the population is 4,650.
16 kinds of insect stamps containing six kinds of butterfles and moths were issued in 1992. It was set to favorite one with the ecological design.
Four kinds of beetle stamps and one small sheet of one kind of beetles were issued in 1994. The ecological design is drawn to the punch hole portion and this was also set to favorite one.
