解説
ミネアポリスのマニアック・レーベル。僕がこの名前を知ったのはご多分に漏れずChris Stamey関連の再発だったが、その前に既に60枚以上のリリースがあるとは思ってもいなかった。どちらかというと現在はオルタナ・カントリーのイメージで売っているESD。しかし、リスト見ればわかるように全体的にはResidentsのようなアヴァンギャルド路線にFred FrithやHenry Cowのプログレ路線、Bruce Cockburn再発シリーズ（これは権利関係の移動に伴い廃盤の模様）など、かなり広範囲のジャンルがカヴァーされている。レーベルの歴史については国内盤「East Side Story」(ビデオアーツ/ VACK1110)で駒形四郎氏により詳しく解説されているので、そちらを参照してほしい。それによると現在のESDのイメージを築いたのは90年春にスタッフとなったスティーヴ・ダリー（元コヨーテ・レコードのマネージャー）の功績によるところが大きいようだ。また、WilcoやSon Voltでお馴染みのプロデューサー、ブライアン・ポールソンも93年に退社するまではここのスタッフだったとか。最近はJimmy Silvaの遺作をお蔵入りにして（その後Popllamaがリリース）一気に評判を落としたESDだが、昨年ライコと配給契約を結び、その縁で国内盤もリリースされるようになったことは素直に喜びたい。（リスト提供：本間咲子）
すっかり更新を忘れていたが、日本との契約後、97年の初め頃に閉鎖されている。結局国内盤がリリースされたのは、マイナス５、ボトル・ロケッツ、ゴー・トゥー・ブレイジズ、編集盤（２曲差し替え）の４枚だけだった。（8/10/99）
