解説
Bar/Noneはちょっとでも米インディーに興味のある人だったら必ず名前を知っている、個性的なレーベルだ。ホボーケンを拠点に優良アーティストを続々と送り出しており、初期ではThey Might Be Giants、少し前ならFreedy Johnstonあたりが代表アーティストで、最近ではEdwin Collinsのアメリカでの配給先としても知られている。
もともとは、日本でも有名なホボーケンのレコード店、Pier Platters（残念ながら先日閉店してしまった）のオーナー、トム・プレンダーキャストがレーベル運営に乗り出したのが86年のこと。契約第１号は、グレン・モロウ(ex-Indivisuals)の作った新バンドRage To Liveだった。その契約が縁で、グレンはトムと一緒にレーベル運営に携わるようになる。続いて契約したT.M.B.G.でレーベルは一気に成長。「ジャンルにこだわらず、あくまでもすばらしい歌を追い続けたい」というグレンの言葉通り、インディーならではの軽いフットワークを生かして、個性的な優良アーティストに貴重な発表の舞台を与え続けている。93年後半に怒濤の新人リリース攻勢をしかけ、これがまた粒揃いと評判に。96年には英Setantaレーベルの米配給もスタートさせ、ギター・ポップから前衛派まで、現在も幅広いリリースを継続中。
初期のLP時代やCDになってからのRestless配給時代がよく把握できないところは悔しいけど、取りあえずわかっているものだけでリストを作ってみた。Embarrasment, Miracle RoomのEPなど番号不明のものが多く、どなたか、詳しい方のご指摘を待ちたいと思う。(11/15/96)
その後独自に調査を続けた結果、随分穴を埋めることが出来た。９７年のリリースはそれまでに比べて数が少なく、控えめな印象だったが、一番の話題は１００番を記念に与えられた、ジュリアナ・ハットフィールドの移籍第１弾EPだろうか。（4/20/98）
