Greater Florence now spreads several miles down the Arno Valley and onto the hills north and south of the city, but the major sights are concentrated within an area that can be crossed on foot in little more than half an hour. Even the train station presents a treat: exit to the street and you're already almost on top of the Santa Maria Novella church, a complex and fascinating building which was Florentine base of the Dominican order.
