i want to know the rules to make a noun (person) out of a noun (general).
for example, to make pianist out of piano or to make new yorker out of new york.

pianist
guitarist
percussionist
accordionist

trumpetter
drummer

but isn't it saxsophone player, is it?
saxophonist? i don't think so.

and people live in that area too.
okinawan (okinawa)
hawaiian (hawaii)
new yorker (new york)
japanese (japan)

how about (nagano) ?
is it naganese?
and (saga)?
is it sagan?

any rules?

i don't think there's one and only rule for that.
anyway, there IS a word "saxphonist" ;-)
you can also say "guitar player", right?

let's wait some reply from tomoki or hiro...

oh, as for the people in saga, they might be called
sagan. i jsut appllied the same rule for tongan
in Tonga.

The question you raised is hard to answer because, in general,
the combination of the sound(so the spelling) and the meaning
is arbitrary. As Atsushi says, I don't think there is a set of
rules which explain (and predict) the combination.

I have found an article in a grammar book at hand titled "A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language" by Randolph Quirk and others. This doesn't give a direct answer to your question, but it may help you understand the difference between the suffixes like -er, -ist, etc. The article is so long that it is
divided into several pieces.

Finally, I thank you for giving me a chance to use my scanner as an OCR.

a2c,
thanks for the message.
saxsophonist...really...
accent on "i", doesn't it?

i will make a list of instruments later.

tomoki,
thank you so much.
lots to read, but i will try reading it when i have more time.
at the moment i am a little packed with my 3rd album.
i have never tried to use my scanner as an ocr yet.
doesn't it make any misreading?
or you had to fix by hand?

Congratulations! On the opening of the new homepage and graduation. I am in charge of the 3rd-year students.
There is much snow left everywhere, but it's getting warmer and warmer day by day. I'm looking forward to seeing you in summer.
From Akita.

Welcome to this forum.

Since Atsushi started to write in English, it is beginning to
become a custom to do so. That makes me feel as if we were
in ITC "electronically." This act of writing to regular members
of AITC in English seems to me to be just like another Readers'
Column.

It has been getting warmer and warmer also in Tokyo, though
still colder than where Atsushi is living. It is wonderful and
amazing that people in remote places can communicate this way,
isn't it? I am glad to have lived to enjoy the benefit of the
technology of the 21st century.

6.tomoki, you sound like a very old man !

how are you all?
glad to be able to talk to you here as well.
thanks for all of your time and work, tomoki !
i am also glad that i have lived long enough to see these new ways of communication.

a2shi, since you are there, if you have a day or a few days,
you should go to the kerama islands now to see whales !!
i am wishing and dreaming to go but i don't know if i can make it this year...
i have seen them close once a few years ago, and it was beautiful.
they says it is a big "hit" year this year.
they come to that area to raise their babies from january to march, in those limited months.

here is a web you might want to check.
it is a page of my friends', where i stay when i go to the zamami island.
check the "whale watching" section.
http://www.cosmos.ne.jp/joyjoy/

and another thing is a big problem of a kind of starfish,
eating corals very quick and giving serious damage on the corals in okinawa.
the numbers of the starfish is incredible since last year,
and they might eat all the corals up.
please check the メQAB donation for beautiful islandsモ.

i wish i were in okinawa !!

I hope someone write something in this weekend.
