YAGYU JUBEI

The swordsman in the Edo period. He served Tokugawa Iemitsu. He mastered "Yagyushinkageryu (Yagyushinkage method of sword)".

HATTORI HANZO


Most famous ninja. He commanded the Iga ninjas. He undertook the espionage activities and various kinds of plot for the Tokugawa family and became a Daimyo(feudal lord) by these achievement.

SARUTOBI SASUKE


One of the Koga ninjas. Because his foster father was a old subordinate of Sanada family, he also served Sanada Yukimura. It is said he died on action in the "Osaka natsu no jin" (the battle of Osaka in summer). The real existence is indistinct. As one of the "Sanada Juyushi"(ten brave warriors in Sanada family), his name and heroic stories are very famous.

MIYAMOTO MUSASHI


The swordsman in the Edo period. Wandering in Japan, he devised "Nitouryu"(two swords style). He didn't write only about the technique of sword but also about the spirit of swordsman in "Gorinsho". His match against Sasaki Kojiro are famous as the duel of the Ganryujima(Ganryu island).

SASAKI KOJIRO


The swordsman in the Edo period.
He repeated the practice to cut the flying swallow and devised the swordsmanship of "Tsubamegaeshi". It is said that he was shouldering a long sword like a clothes pole.
He served the feudal lord, Hosokawa Tadaoki. Being defeated by Miyamoto Musashi at the duel of the Ganryujima, he died.

There are many cases he is drawn due to a novel, as a beautiful youngman in showy dress and with hair style like a boy . Such young people in strange fashion were called "Kabukimono"s.

MITO KOUMON
(MITO MITSUKUNI)


He was the lord of eastern country Mito. He was the intelligent leader who compiled "Dainihonshi" (the Large Japanese History". However, due to novels , rather he is famous as an old man disguised and traveled the countries correcting injustices. TV program "Mito Koumon" continues for very very long years.

OISHI KURANOSUKE


The leader of the "Akou Roushi"( masterless samurais of Akou). He was usually rather relaxed without violent emotion and thought the fact along the utility. So, the revenge was the last decision for him. His prudent strategy and success are respected by almost Japanese.

RYOUKAN


He was the priest who did not request social success. He was playing innocently every day with children in the village. The symbol of calm and undirt. People call him "Ryoukan-san" with intimacy.

KONDO ISAMI


The swordman who succeeded the head family of "Tennenrishinryu (Tennenrishin method of sword)". The director of the garrison, "Shinsengumi" in last stage of Edo period. He led many violent members well with his manly spirit and certain trust.
He resisted the closure of the Edo shogunate until his last, then he got defeated and was decapitated.

HIJIKATA TOSHIZO


A swordman of Tennenrishinryu. The subdirector of "Shinsengumi", the garrison in last stage of Edo period. He was a good friend of Kondo Isami from his infancy. Their friendship did not change all their lives.
Fighting in various battles after the death of Kondo, he never surrendered. When their defeat became decisive finally in Hokkaido, he jumped out before enemies by himself and was shotted to die. He was thirty four years old then.
Because he was a handsome man, many women loved him and he was rumored even the love with the male.


OKITA SOUJI


A swordman of Tennenrishinryu. The captain of the first party of "Shinsengumi".
Although he was a gifted swordsman, he died by tuberculosis in his twenties.

SAKAMOTO RYOMA


Almost every heros of Boshin Wars (Meiji Revolution) were the warriors of countryside. He was one of them. He went to Edo(Tokyo) with lofty ambitious and thought about the future of Japan.
His bold idea and aggressive action played an important role to open up a new era.
"Kaientai" was the trading company which he started.
He is remaining to the heart of Japanese as "a refreshing youth who did not have anything other than dream and will" because he was assassinated at thirty three years old before Meiji government started.

NINOYIYA SONTOKU


Ninomiya Kinjiro was his name in infancy. He is famous as a diligent child who studied well and helped the work of parents besides. Until some years ago, there were the bronze statues in akmost every elementary schools in Japan. They were modeled on him, who walked with firewoods on his back while reading a book. However, children will be run over by cars if they do so now, therefore the statues were removed before we knew it.
