SANADA JUYUSHI
(10 brave warriors of Sanada)
The age of wars
The brave warriors who served Sanada Yukimura. Sarutobi Sasuke, Kirigakure Saizo, Miyoshi Seikai Nyudo, Miyoshi Isa Nyudo, Anayama Kosuke, Unno Rokuro, Kakei Juzo, Nezu Jinpachi, Mochizuki Rokuro and Yuri Kamanosuke. The real existence is indistinct. Although Sanada's territory was small, they were famous as a formidable army which defeat a large army with a few soldiers.
AKOUROUSHI (Masterless samurais of Akou)
SHIJUSHICHISHI (47 warriors)
Edo era
These warriors were serving Asano family of a western region Akou. Their master (Asanotakuminokami) quarreled with the head of a distinguished family (Kira Kozukenosuke) and caused his injury in the government place. Therefore, he was ordered hisown hara-kiri (seppuku), so, his subjects became the unemployed samurais (ronins).
They claimed that it was unfair that only their master was punished though the responsibility of the quarrel must be even. Because this opinion was not adopted, they attacked the enemy of their master by themselves. The people didn't know whether their assertion was correct or not, and the revenge was not permitted legally. However, people did not prevent the progress of their plan, because they were sympathetic to their heart of loyalty to the master. So to speak, it was "the murder that was announced".
Forty-seven samurais including Oishi Kuranosuke succeeded in killing the enemy in the end of long time and scrupulous preparation. Their costumes in the day of the execution were fire fighting clothes.
People gave applause to their success and their righteous action after that; every members performed hara-kiri without any life request. Hara-kiri was the method of punishment with honor.

This episode is famous as the story of "Chushingura".
SHINSENGUMI
(Party who was formed newly)
Edo era
The garrison which the Edo shogunate organized with the excellent masterless samurais. Their duty was to suppress the antiestablishment sects in Kyoto.
Although they were the police of Establishment, as for they the popularity in the posterity is high. The reasons were;
1) They were the last swordsmen using Japanese sword (katana) in battle.
2) They were defeated and lost their young lives at last.
3) The leaders; Kondo Isami , Hijikata Toshizo and etc. were very attractive persons.
4) They were tied strongly by the friendship and real justice between men.
5) Their blue uniforms were good looking.
There are many fans in the women especially.

Edo era
It was the commando that boys of Aizu organized in the fight between the old Edo shogunate and the Meiji new government (the Boshin wars).
Every boys were below 17 years old. Seeing the castle smoking from the summit of mountain, they misunderstood their defeat and were prepared for death by themselves. Some could die soon and others hesitated to die readily.
The situation of them who had to die is conveyed by dance and song in posterity as the tragedy caused with the administration shift.
