DX NEWS----------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a media release about a community broadcasting fundraising appeal
in Australia to raise money for mobile community stations in East Timor.
"PEOPLE'S RADIO FOR EAST TIMOR". Listeners to community radio have the
chance to join others around the country when Australian community radio
launches an appeal for the reconstruction of the communications
infrastructure in East Timor. Many of the 250 stations, representing the
Indigenous, Ethnic, General, Christian and Print Handicapped community
stations are banding together to schedule a week of fundraising from
November 29.
Australia's National Community Media Council (NCMC), working with Mr Xanana
Gusmao's Committee for National Resistance in East Timor (CNRT) and the aid
agencies APHEDA and Community Aid Abroad have recognized that accessible
radio communication is a major priority if reconstruction is to be
effective and involve the East Timorese people. A team including Community
Broadcasting technicians is due back from East Timor within the fortnight
with detailed delivery and logistic strategies for the project. Funds
raised will go toward the establishment of two mobile radio units which
will broadcast in a range of languages and dialects to villages spread
around East Timor. These will complement United Nations efforts in
reconstructing broadcast facilities in Dili, and will provide much needed
information about the work of NGO's, churches, CNRT, UNTAET and UN forces
in the reconstruction
of East Timor.
The mobile units will enable information and education to take place in the
important areas of reconstruction, security, health care and the
development of an independent and democratic East Timor. It will also be
used to solicit feedback from the East Timorese people about developments
in their villages, their on going needs and will allow the East Timorese
people to participate more effectively in their country's reconstruction.
Community broadcasters are keen to provide any training necessary for the
project to be effective.
Bruce Francis, Executive Officer of the National Ethnic and Multicultural
Broadcasters Council said, "This is an important project that will help the
East Timorese in taking control of their own destiny. Australian Community
Broadcasters have the skills and experience to assist, and this is a
tangible project wanted and needed by the people of East Timor. It will
also reinforce in the Australian public's mind both our ongoing
responsibilities towards East Timor and the important part that Community
Broadcasting plays in the Australian community." Stay tuned to your local
community radio station for details of the radiothon and how to pledge your
support. If you can't tune in then phone in your donation to Community Aid
Abroad on 1800 034 034 from anywhere in Australia.
For further information, Bruce Francis at the National Ethnic &
Multicultural Broadcasters Council on (03) 9486 9549 or Christina Alvarez
