Japanese Railroad Guide

Traveling by train is the most rational transportation method for travellers in Japan. The fare is relatively inexpensive for Japan and you can arrive at your destination on time. The Japanese railroad network is very well developed.

Automatic root selector

The railroad lines are laid out like blood vessels finely throughout Japan. Especially in the larger cities, there are many subway routes and the subway networks are complicated. Japanese people often use software that automatically calculates the shortest routes. You can use this software to immediately formulate the route you desire and to calculate travel time and travel expenses.

This software is also offered on the Internet. The following is a link to the software site. This tool is very convenient, so I strongly recommend that you use it.

How to buy a ticket

The vending machine of a train ticket may look complicated. However, the fundamental operation is easy. You put your in money and push the button indicating the the price of the ticket you want to buy.

When you buy a ticket from a vending machine, you need to know the ticket price to the destination in advance. A map and corresponding prices usually appear on the vending machine.

Note that children can usually ride the train at half price; however, you must buy a child ticket. In the case of the vending machine in the photograph, you can push the the leftmost button to select an adult or child ticket. (You can also choose a desired number of tickets). If the button for a child ticket is not pushed, adult is selected by default.
