Payment (Taxes & Tips)

At a restaurant, you pay as you leave. You pass the check that was put on your table to the cashiere at the exit. You hardly ever pay the bill at your table. Also, at a buckwheat noodle shop, you may need to buy a food ticket in advance from a vending machine or other device before you order.

Taxes & Tips

You must pay a consumption tax for general purchases. The consumption tax is 0.5% (for example, a 1,000 yen purchase before the tax is 1,050 yen afterward). The consumption tax was newly introduced only recently and caused confusion at the time of introduction. Therefore, either of two prices may be displayed on an item: the price with consumption tax included or the price without consumption tax is included.

The concept of tipping does not exist in Japan. You need not pay tips.

How Change is Returned

Japanese people may hand you your change all at once like in this photograph. This is common even though receiving so much at once is difficult. When checking the amount of change, a cashiere will only count the bills.
In Japan, you need hardly worry at all that you will be deceived out of your correct change.
