Popular Japanese Foods

Japanese people eat rice as their staple food. When Japanese do not eat rice, they eat bread or noodles (buckwheat noodles, Japanese noodles, ramen noodles, or spaghetti) instead. However, for supper, almost all Japanese people eat boiled rice with their meal.


Soba


At a soba restaurant, you can usually order Japanese noodles as well as buckwheat noodles. So, when placing an order, you must specify whether you want Japanese noodles, called udon, or buckwheat noodles, called soba. Moreover, soba can be served either in warm soup or boiled and then served cold. You must also specify this depending on the case.
Appearance Explanation
The left hand photograph shows zaru soba. Zaru soba is garnished with round slices of green onion and a green paste called wasabi (Japanese horseradish). You can mix these with the soup and noodles according to your taste. -- Never mix in too much Japanese horseradish! Wasabi is hot!

Gyudon (Beef Bowl)


There are many gyudon (beef bowl) fast food restaurants in Japanese towns. The price is cheap and you can eat quickly without waiting, so the fast food restaurants are especially popular among young men.

You can order medium, large, and extra large sizes of beef bowl. The photograph shows a medium bowl which costs 280 yen.

Rice Balls


The rice ball is a common food in Japan. A rice ball is boiled rice wrapped around food and rolled in dried seaweed. Rice balls sell well at convenience stores. Japanese eat rice balls mainly for breakfast and lunch. The tast becomes less delicious when the dried seaweed contains moisture, so the seaweed is packaged separately in the second layer of a two layered package.

This rice balls contains salty tasting grilled salmon. There are other kinds of rice balls containing foods such as pickled plums, that are very sour and have a seed at the center, and dried bonito.
