- 子供の頃、「+」(足す)の複数個の組み合わせとしての「×」(掛ける)を知ったとき、
或いは、その「×」(掛ける)の複数個の組み合わせとしての「^」(べき乗)を知ったとき、
その新しい記号がもたらす数字の大きさに驚きもしたし、また、ひじょうに興奮した。そして、その時思ったのは、
この次は、どうなるのか?という期待である。
だが、それ以上の表記方法に、お目にかかることはなかった。
一応、この次の段階があり、「polypower」という呼ばれ方をするが、これが使われるのは数学のごく一部の分野に過ぎない。
ただ、このような演算を次々に定義していくことは可能である。今回、この「+」⇒「×」⇒「^」(べき)の先の演算について考えてみる。
- まず、「×」や「^」(べき)がどのように導入されたかを考えてみる。
例えば、5@3(@は二項演算)の形で表すなら、「×」と「^」は以下のように定義できる。
5×3=5+5+5(5を3つ足す)よって、次の演算を仮にaという記号で表すなら、自然な拡張として、
5^3=5×5×5(5を3つ掛ける)
5a3=5^5^5と定義できる。
ここで、「^」という演算は非可換なので、どちらのべきを先に評価するかを決める必要があるが、
通常、「^」は右結合的(つまり右から先)に解釈されるので、5a3=5^(5^5)と定義する。この演算を「polypower」と呼ぶことがある。
- あとは、同じように続ければよい。 次の演算をb、c、d、……とし、
5b3=5a(5a5)と定義すればよい。
5c3=5b(5b5)
5d3=5c(5c5)
……
これらの表記によって表される数の具体的な10進表記での値については、あまりにも大き過ぎて、 考える気がしない。ただ、途轍もなく大きいことだけはまちがいない。
