1984.
A Taster's Diary 19 Years On
COLOUR
Pure, intense gold with glittering highlights,
glowing like the rays of a glorious Atlantic
sunset shimmering on the sea below me as l
take in the view from Barnhil, revisited
in the footsteps of George Orwell.
NOSE
A Joy. The subtle influence of sherry finishing
is immediate but in no way suppresses the
impact of almonds, hazelnuts and citrus.
Perhaps a hint of wood pine and floral tea...
what 'Room 101' nightmare it would be to be
deprived of the sense of smell when there
is so much here to stimulate and excite!
TASTE
The weather foul, a gale howling outside...
what better backdrop for a full appreciation
of this bold, majestic whisky, the warmth on
the tongue, the richly rewarding aftertaste
that lingers long on the palate. Without
succumbing to traditional taster's 'doublespeak',
this 1984 special edition is as soft as it
is strong, shy yet seductive, smooth but bursting
with indomitable spirit and individuality.
In short, a fitting tribute to great work,
a great man ... and a great location for the
crafting of one the finest whiskies on earth.

As an 'extremely un-getable place', the secluded farmhouse
of Barnhill on the remote northern tip of Jura provided the
perfect setting for Orwell to concentrate on the creation
of what was destined to become his masterpiece.
With no electricity or telephone, accompanied only by his
typewriter, the year he spent here is recorded in diary notes
recounting the forbidding terrain and fiercely elemental island
weather that continue to play so much a part in the unique
characteristics of Isle of Jura Single Malt Scotch whisky to this day.
