The Message from the Chairman of the National Trust

The National Trust in Britain is an independent charity which was founded in 1895 as a pioneering conservation body. Its example has spurred similar movements throughout the world. The National Trust exists to protect and conserve areas of outstanding natural beauty and historic interest for the benefit of present and future generations. Today, 2.8 million members support the National Trust, through membership subscriptions and gifts, which make a vital contribution to National Trust funds. The National Trust exists so that people can enjoy the beauty and splendour of the properties cared for by Britain's leading conservation charity.

The National Trust was delighted to welcome Mr. Takusama Ono as an official artist of the Association of National Trusts in Japan. He toured 58 properties of the National Trust in 1999, drawing vivid sketches.
It is a pleasure for the National Trust to exhibit Mr Ono's resulting artworks at a number of our properties in 2001, as a part of the large-scale cultural exchange program, "Japan 2001" jointly organised by the UK and Japan.

We hope that the Exhibition will help to promote mutual understanding between Japan and the UK, and disseminate the culture of preserving natural and historical environments.

Charles Nunneley
Chairman of The National Trust
