Research->Drum Performance->Bass Drum
Information about drums and how to play by Mr.H, who is a drummer playing at "SugerSweet"in Osaka.
Getting Started
If you are to play at the live, you should be the first to arrive at the location. Because you will have to consult with other drummers and then put the drum set at the center of the stage. Other settings like where to put a microphone cannot be started until the settings of the drum set is completed.
First thing to do in the drum settings is to decide where to put the bass drum.
In rehearsal, the bass drum is the first instrument that is to be started with. Preparing or exercising yourself is the next thing to do.
The same thing is applicable to the studio rehearsal or recording. Besides, first thing to do in the recording is often to take the sound of drum.

Settings

Stable and proper drum performance comes from proper settings. Drummers do not hold their instruments when they are playing. So before you play at the live, you will have to see to it that the drum is firmly fixed. Especially if the bass drum is not fixed properly, it will be a disaster.
When you complete the settings of the main body of the drum, then you will set the pedals.
Position Considering the overall balance of the stage, you will decide the position of the bass drum. It would be better to follow the instruction of the staff.
Make sure that your elbow or the stick will not hit the wall or the amplifiers.
Angle The sound will be better if you put the front side litte bit higher.
This makes the safeguard very effective, because the area touching the floor decreases, and the load concentrates on the feet of a bass drum.
Fixing The tip of the foot is made of rubber, but the axis of the foot is made of metal and look like a needle. The metal part of the foot appears when you tighten the rubber part of the foot as shown in the photo below. Choose the best way to fix your bass drum considering the balance between the feet of the bass drum and the floor or the drum mat.

Nowadays I see a good drum mat is prepared in most of the places, but if there is no such one and you can not damage the floor, using stick and parcel tape will be the good antidote as shown below.
Setting Drum Throne When your thigh is going down forward, that is the standard position. Sitting softly or in higher position is suitable for fast and rhythmical play. Sitting deeply or in lower position is suitable for heavy play. At first, I encourage you to get used to playing at the standard height of drum throne.
Setting all parts of the drum set will be done according to the height of the throne.
How to sit on the throne can be varied according to the tune.
