This past spring I re-read the eight "Anne" books in order to reacquaint myself with Anne before I attended the L.M. Montgomery Conference in P.E.I. in June. I found Anne of Green Gables as delightful as always, Anne of Avonlea was charming and Anne of the Island was romantically satisfying. When I came to the fourth Anne book, Anne of Windy Poplars/Willows, I was not expecting to enjoy it for several reasons. First of all, I knew that LMM had written this book later in her life (it was published in the fall of 1936) and that it, along with Anne of Ingleside, was not written in chronological order of Anne's life. Secondly, I had learned that in 1934 the first talking movie of Anne of Green Gables had been released and that LMM had yielded to the public's and her publisher's desire to know more about Anne when she wrote Anne of Windy Poplars/Willows. And thirdly, I had read that LMM had written this book in record short time. All in all, I was not expecting a lot from the book.
I had read the book once before but it was so long ago that I only vaguely remembered it. Since reading the book, I have watched two movie versions of it (Kevin Sullivan's Anne of Green Gables - The Sequel and the 1940 movie Anne of Windly Poplars) and this only served to further fog and confuse the "real" story.
I did remember one thing though. The first time I read the book I read the "Anne of Windy Poplars" version. So this time I found a dusty old 1936 British edition of "Anne of Windy Willows" to read and, much to my surprise, I was quite enchanted with it. I have always loved LMM's short stories, and much of Anne of Windy Poplars/Willows is episodic. It contains 9 short stories which had previously been published in magazines. Eight of the stories were published in The Family Herald and Weekly Star (Montreal, Quebec) between May 6 and July 1, 1936. The other story "The Little Fellow's Photograph" - found in chapters 2 and 3 of The Second Year - was published much earlier on Sept. 8, 1906 in Classmate magazine. The Family Herald and Weekly Star 誌 ( Montreal, Quebec ) に掲載されたものです。
Why does this book have two different English titles? We can thank Maud herself for the answer to this question. She provided it in a letter dated December 27, 1936 to her long time pen pal George B. ManMillan of Scotland.
My own title was "Anne of Windy Willows." But Stokes (her American publisher) thought this title too reminiscent of Kenneth Grahame's fairy animal story "The Wind In the Willows" ..... I thought this very far-fetched but suggested "Poplars" in place of "Willows". But Harrap (her British publisher) scouted the idea and insisted on retaining "Willows". Mr. Harrap said the English people knew very little about poplars and all about willows!! (My Dear Mr. M., pages 180-1). ( My Dear Mr. M., pages 180-1 ) 。
So the book was published as Anne of Windy Poplars in United States and Canada and Anne of Windy Willows in England and Australia.
I chose to read Anne of Windy Willows this time because of something else that LMM had told her friend MacMillan in that same letter as mentioned above. Maud told MacMillan that "Stokes thought some of the incidents mentioned in Anne's walk through the churchyard and later on in her visit to "Tomgallon House" were too gruesome and advised they be cut out" (My Dear Mr. M., page 180) - so Maud did cut out some passages. But LMM thought that Harrap would use Stokes' plates to print the book, as they had done in the past, so she didn't advise Harrap of the changes. As a result, there are passages in Anne of Windy Willows that do not appear in Anne of Windy Poplars. I read Anne of Windy Willows this time to discover those differences.
In chapter 5 of The First Year, Anne goes for a walk in a nearby graveyard. She is surprised to meet the local dressmaker, Miss Valentine Courtaloe, there. Miss Courtaloe is able to provide Anne with brief histories on many of the persons buried in the cemetery. There are 9 graves described in Anne of Windy "Willows" that are missing from "Poplars". One of the most "gruesome" is Miss Courtaloe's description of Stephen Pringle's grave:
"This is where Stephen Pringle is buried. They couldn't get his eyes closed. He was buried with them wide open." Anne shivered. She had a dreadful vision of the dead Pringle lying under the sod, still staring balefully upward at her out of eyes that had never been closed. (AWW, Harrap, 1936, page 61). ( AWW, Harrap, 1936, page 61 ) 。
In her last letter to Gilbert at the end of the book Anne writes to Gilbert that she "went to my old graveyard and wondered IF STEPHEN PRINGLE HAS CLOSED HIS EYES AT LAST, AND if Herbert Pringle occasionally chuckled to himself in his grave."
Being the perfectionist that she was, LMM had carefully removed this reference to Stephen Pringle when she edited "Poplars" at Stokes request.
Readers of "Poplars" will find it hard to believe that, despite all the Tomgallon tragedies that they have already read (in chapters 10 and 11 of The Third Year), Miss Minerva Tomgallon revealed 11 more tragedies to Anne in "Willows" than in "Poplars". One of the tragedies - deemed too gruesome by Stokes and therefore changed in "Poplars" - was told to Anne as she prepared to spend the night in one of Miss Tomgallon's spare bedrooms.
"Aunt Annabella hanged herself in that closet. She had been ...melancholy...for quite a time, and finally she was not invited to a wedding she thought she should have been and it preyed on her mind. Aunt Annabella always liked to be in the limelight." ( AWW, Harrap, 1936, page 275 )
In "Poplars" LMM substituted the above tragedy with the following. Miss Minerva tells Anne that the spare rooom is 「ポプラ」において、 モンゴメリは下記のように前述の悲劇を置き換えています。
"The room Oscar Tomgallon came back to life in - after being thought dead for two days. They DIDN'T WANT HIM TO, you know - THAT was the tragedy." (AWP, McClelland & Stewart, 1936, page 280). ( AWP, McClelland & Stewart, 1936, page 280 ) 。
As I mentioned above, many of the stories in AWW/P were published before the book was as short stoies in magazines. Anne's visit to the Tomgallon House was published under the title "A Tragic Evening" in Family Herald and Weekly Star on June 24, 1936. Interesting enough, the short story contains all the tragedies later edited out of the book, so Canadian readers of the Family Herald may have already read the gruesome tragedies before the book came out anyway. アンの Tomgallon家訪問は、 1936 年 6 月 24 日の Family Herald and Weekly Star誌に、「 A Tragic Evening 」として掲載されたものです。
As was often the case, LMM had the last laugh when it came to Anne of Windy Poplars versus Anne of Windy Willows. Again I will refer to her December 27, 1936 letter to George MacMillan. It seems that Mr. MacMillan had sent LMM a clipping from the Newsagent containing its comment on the Daily Mirror's choice of Anne as the romantic book of the month. The article also contained a quote from the book. The joke is that the bit quoted as being most amusing was one of the bits that Stokes had cut from the American edition!
Avid LMM fans may want to choose the British edition of Anne of Windy Willow for their next reading in order not to miss even one of Maud's amusing anecdotes!
