. . MAKOTO KOMATSU - MESSAGE . . .

My attitude toward mywork

I create something in order to make our daily home and
social life comfortable. My works are not designed on
paper or PC, but through making trial models, feeling
the material.
I am in the habit of asking myself whether the design
is something that I really want, not something good
to indefinite public.

CRINKLE/CRUMPLE Series

These series are typical of my design, dates back to
1975.Ifd like to mention how I came up with these
series, and why they came to be my life work.
Since I was a student, I have been interested in slip
casting mold, which is the unique ceramics technique.
Slip casting mold technique is commonly utilized for
mass-producing asymmetric works with plaster mold,
while wheel-making mold is for producing symmetric work.
Although the feature of slip casting mold technique had
been commonly exploited for production with low price
rather than high quality, I had intended to utilize this
technique for the purpose of figurative arts.
Plaster has a close relation to ceramics; it is suitable
for absorbing extra moisture of clay, molding and
mass-production.
I use it quite often as well as clay. When the rest of
plaster after work hardens on the board, paper and plastic,
these textures are traced to the plaster.I made use of this
interesting incident; I applied contingent crinkle and
crumple of various materials to not only figurative art but
also daily ceramics ware.At this meaning, this series can
be defined as designed product.Fortunately, these series
still survive, still in production, due to continuous demand.

Doorknob -gSOYUSHIhgSPINh
Only creator does not accomplish the value of products,
but both user and creator do it, that is to say, the
value is accomplished for the first time when users
take it in to themselves with their own taste.gSQ Seriesh
, which is the table seasoning container set coordinated
freely upon the users own selection, and gCUP KITSh,
which can be various shape by exchanging parts, are
developed under the above mentioned concept.
gSOYUSHIhis also developed under the similar concept;
the grip can be exchanged, coordinating with the interior,
seasons, like changing dresses.
gSPINh is also the doorknob series at which parts are
removable and exchangeable, but the material is specialized
in aluminum. It is shaped by NC (Numeral Control) lathe
process, and stained with vivid and everlasting color. The
patterns exist up to a few hundreds, and this system has
interesting possibility when users or interior designers
add their own designed parts.

KUU Series
Creatorsftemperaments influence the process of craftwork.
As for me, it is craftsman ship.I usually get some idea
form material and technique; for KUU series, they are white
porcelain and fretwork technique. This technique is commonly
applied for a lot of materials, such as metal or porcelain,
and much care is necessary at any materials.Especially when
I pierce on clay, I pay great attention because itfs very
fragile. The feature of KUU series is delicateness and
aesthetic awareness to the spaces, something like paths that
gKih passes through.
This series go with thin, rather than thick material.First,
I make thin and even texture with slip casting mold, and
then pierce on it one by one.The more holes are created,
the lighter this work comes, and vanishes at the last.I
would like to say this action is de-decoration, as the
opposite meaning of decoration.I hope to express some
oriental ideas; coming to nothing to the utmost limit can
reach absolute freedom.
